It's wonderful working with this year's Helen's Run.Walk.Ride. Junior Ambassadors, Jillian and Ashley LoCurto. As Camp Counselors at Camp Helen Keller and students at Manhasset High School in Manhasset, New York, they have taken huge steps on fundraising for HKS' DeafBlind community and reached out to many supporters who joined their very own fundraising team. Together, they have contributed greatly to this year's goal, and are running as one of the top teams! You can regi...ster https://events.elitefeats.com/hks21 and fundraise with us at https://www.grouprev.com/HelenKeller21. Join us from April 24 - May 9! Funds raised from this event will enable HKS to do all we can to assist our consumers with sensory loss to receive equal access to opportunity. #HelensRunWalkRide2021 #BreakDownBarriers #HKSLiveThriveGrow #HKSGratitude #Blind #VisuallyImpaired #HearingImpaired #HearingLoss #DeafBlind #Accessibility #LowVision #Fundraising #5K #ASL #AmericanSignLanguage #DeafBlind #NonProfit #Camp #SummerCamp Image Description: Two young sisters standing together with their thumbs up and smiling. At Helen Keller Services, we come to know each DeafBlind person as an individual so we can support them in the best way possible. Accessibility preferences vary resulting in differences between individual, environments, and situations! As a former HKNC staff member, we were committed to creating an environment where Robert Tarango could thrive both at his place of employment as well as pre-production of the film, Feeling Through. Learn more about the process by watching Connecting the Dots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq-DlHxPEBY #FeelingThrough #Accessibility #ForYourConsideration #FYC #DeafBlind
Meet one of our Helen's Run.Walk.Ride. Junior Ambassador, Holly Sternlicht! Holly, a student at Schreiber High School in Port Washington, New York, has been a great helping hand on spreading awareness on HKS' mission and goal. Her ongoing fundraising efforts have made a tremendous impact to this year's campaign and to the DeafBlind individuals we serve. Helen Keller Services cannot be more thankful for those local supporters who participated for our event through Holly's ...help! Join us from April 24th - May 9th: https://events.elitefeats.com/hks21 and bring your family, friends, and pets! It's never too late to start fundraising either! https://www.grouprev.com/HelenKeller21 Funds raised from this event will enable HKS to do all we can to assist our consumers with sensory loss to receive equal access to opportunity! #NationalPetDay #HelensRunWalkRide2021 #BreakDownBarriers #HKSLiveThriveGrow #HKSGratitude #Blind #VisuallyImpaired #HearingImpaired #HearingLoss #DeafBlind #Accessibility #LowVision #Fundraising #5K #ASL #AmericanSignLanguage #DeafBlind #NonProfit #Pet Image Description: Holly S. petting her dog while holding the leash and smiling. If you see a working #guidedog or #servicedog team, the best thing to do is to ignore the dog and let them continue their work, even if the dog looks in your direction. Talking to, petting, or otherwise distracting a working dog can result in the injury of the handler who relies on their dog to maintain their focus on the path ahead. The only appropriate time to greet their dog is if you receive permission from the handler first.... #NationalHugYourDogDay #AssistanceDog #WorkingDog #GuideDoginTraining #ServiceDogHandler #DeafBlind Image Description: A young adult with a service dog at a park. Accessibility is more than just interpretation or captions, it’s a creative process! Feeling Through’s behind-the-scenes documentary "Connecting the Dots" captures our interpreter, Erin, not only interpreting spoken language into ASL, but also working with Robert to avert his eyes when bright lights turn on, explaining how to use the Silent Call pager for a vibration alert, and giving visual information about the reactions of around him tactually on his leg. Remember, for ...some individuals with low vision, bright lights can be distracting or painful, but non-visual communication like tactile cues and vibration alerts can provide the accessibility needed so talented people like Robert don’t need to skip a beat! What is your favorite non-visual form of communication?? #FeelingThrough #DeafBlind #DeafBlindTalent #LowVision #ASL #Accessibility See more

Reach out and make connections with the Blind community. Judy, a student at Helen Keller Services for the Blind, encourages people who are sighted not to be afraid to connect with people who are blind: you very well might make a new friend! Description: Student Judy Wieber provides encouraging words to the blind and sighted communities, while Doug Roland and Monica Godfrey-Lehrer listen. A sign language interpreter is included in the virtual call. Writing: A message for the sighted.
The first step may be the hardest, but it's also the most important. If you're just starting your journey with a white cane, listen to these encouraging words from Monica Godfrey-Lehrer, supervisor of orientation and mobility at Helen Keller National Center. Description: Short clip of Monica Godfrey-Lehrer talking about the importance of having a white cane (on left), with a sign language interpreter (on right). Writing: Starting your Journey with a White Cane.
