As this memorable day in our nations history comes to a close, our team at Helping Hands would like to honor and remember Martin Luther King, Jr. for the impact he made on the world. During these unprecedented times, we must remain strong and united as a nation. Martin Luther King Jr. showed us by speaking up, reaching out, and taking the lead, change can happen. It's hump day, everyone! We’re halfway through the week. I hope everyone had a happy Labor Day weekend! I know our staff loved having a day to recuperate and get back to work. Normally, after Labor Day, a majority of our kids return to school and begin their academic year routine. Unfortunately, thats not the case this year due to COVID-19. Your child's routine may have been thrown off starting in March. With the return to school just around the corner, here are a few helpful... tips to help your child readjust to a school routine. First, reintroduce or create a new morning routine. Slowly start waking your child up a little earlier each morning so they adjust to the new wake up time before returning to school. If your child is working remotely when school begins, create a daily schedule or use a visual schedule. You may not know the exact schedule for your child, but even walking through a structured day may make them feel more at ease, and will help them adjust to this new normal. Lastly, make sure your child or the teacher working with your child knows/ has access to their favorite reinforcers. We want your child to associate school as a positive place. What better way to do that then providing them with their favorite toys? If you would like more helpful tips or assistance implementing these strategies with your child, contact us today! Our team of Behavior Technicians and Licensed Behavior Analysts are ready to help you and your family. See more
Today is Taco Tuesday!! Who doesn’t love tacos!? Many individuals with Autism and kids in general can be picky eaters. Recent studies have shown that children with autism are five times more likely to have mealtime challenges such as extremely limited food selections, ritualistic eating habits (e.g. no food can touch) and meal-related tantrums. This phenomenon is still being studied to understand the autism-picky eating connection. Psychologist Emily Kuschner, PhD, of the Chi...ldren’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) has been studying this topic for quite some time. She has compiled a list of strategies to help expand your Childs diet. These strategies cover steps towards tasting new items, experiencing different textures, offering rewards and more. If you would like to work on expanding your Child’s diet and work on other skills, contact us today! See more
Happy Monday everyone! July is quickly wrapping up and we’re hitting peak summer weather. IT’S GETTING HOT. This is the perfect time to go swimming with family and friends. Aquatic therapy has been used as a treatment approach for children with autism when working on fine motor and gross motor skills. Studies have shown that water play is a highly motivating activity for children with autism, providing them with needed sensory input. Aquatic play is a great way for individual...s to explore a different environment and gain new social skills when swimming with groups. In order for the child to have success with aquatic activities and be safe at all times, it’s best for them to know basic swimming skills. What better time to teach a child to swim than in summer during this warm weather! We have systematically broken down each step of swimming to get your child from the side of the pool in to the water If you would like your child to work on sensory immersion techniques and multiple other skills, contact us today! Our team of behavior technicians and behavior analysts are here to make a positive impact for your child during the summer and moving forward! See more
