"Running, cycling, swimming, hiking, climbing, exploring and playing games not only provide opportunities for physical activity, they also stimulate imagination and creativity, help us to develop problem-solving skills and encourage interaction with others and the environment. Free play outdoors which isn’t organized or supervised closely by parents is especially good for activity levels, wellbeing, social and emotional development and resilience."

The nine-spotted ladybug has been the state insect of New York since 1989, though its populations have severely declined as the numbers of introduced species such as the seven-spotted ladybug have increased. It was for some time thought extinct in New York, so in 2006, the state considered designating the pink spotted ladybug as state insect instead, but the bill did not pass. To learn more, and to help the Nine-spotted Ladybug and the Entomologists at Cornell University by becoming a Citizen Scientist for the Lost Ladybug Project, visit lostladybug.org/participate.php

One bright spot of the previous year is that so many of us spent more time outdoors with friends and family than ever before. Let’s safely continue that trend in the new year! We’ll be sharing tips and stories to inspire you on our social media channels and once a month on our Good Natured blog. We hope you will share your adventures with us by tagging us on our social media platforms and using #TogetherOutside. Check out our first ‘Together Outside’ blog entry entitled On the Street Where You Live", written by HHNM’s Marketing Manager Joanna Marvel.
