On this day in Oyster Bay... Nimrod IV - believed to be the largest sloop made entirely out of aluminum (35 feet long) - was launched at the shipyard. Owner Robert J. Hall would go on to race the sloop numerous times. Reference is made to Hall's Nimrod IV winning Class B in the 1949 Marblehead-Halifax race - as seen in the attached screenshot.

On this day in Oyster Bay... On April 2, 1887 an application was made before a judge to appoint two commissioners in the proposed extension of the Mineola branch from Locust Valley to Oyster Bay. Interesting bit - the original intention was to further extend the line through to Northport.
Mark your calendars!
On this day in Oyster Bay... On November 25, 1914 Julia Coles purchased the Townsend Homestead from Edward Townsend Jr. Through previous posts we have covered the changes in ownership of the Townsend Homestead in Oyster Bay - with Edward having purchased the property through an auction in October of 1912. ... Julia Coles' ownership of the property would be significant as she would be the one to sell the property to the D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Revolution) in 1933. Significant because this deed of sale placed a number of restrictions on how the property would be operated and referred to - specifically mandating that the name Raynham Hall be used in perpetuity.
