1437 E. Market St Red Hook The next house was the home of George Hart and family, and Louis Gale and his mother. The first Mrs. Hart was a sister to Louis Gale, and she left two boys, Frank and George. The second Mrs. Hart was from Vermont and she was a very kind mother to the two motherless boys. She had two girls, Hattie and Esther. Original building still stands, on 1867 map C. Pulver Reminiscences of Red Hook, Edmund Basset 1926... See the full map at www.historicredhook.org/bassett

What does place mean to you? In this new blog post, Historic Red Hook Trustee Thea Burgess challenges us to think critically about what place means in our lives, how it shapes us today, and what it means for our study of people in the past. Visit www.historicredhook.org/blog/importance-of-place

Happy Women's History Month! Mrs. Roosevelt understood that in order to make things happen, you didn’t have to be a first lady of the world, or the first lady of the United States, or a king, or a president, you had the power to do that right where you are, right in your community. [She charges us] to make the world a better place right where we are, right in our local community, like right here in Tivoli and right here in Red Hook. Eleanor Roosevelt continues to be a powerful role model for us today, as Jeffrey Urbin attests in this short video on the Roosevelt’s and the responsibility we all share within our community to be good neighbors, leaders, and followers. This spring, enjoy the fair weather and swing by the Tivoli pocket park to spend some time with Eleanor yourself!

We need your help to decorate our tree! Starting next week, you can pick up one of our free, fillable ornaments from locations throughout the Village (list to come). Like mini time capsules, these ornaments open up and we’d like you and your family to write a note with a happy thought about 2020. Decorate and fill the ornament with other items as you wish. Then, come and hang it on our tree on the Elmendorph Green! Your memories will be archived in our collections. Thanks to our sponsor, Ulster Savings Bank, for making this project possible and to Battenfeld's Christmas Tree Farm for the tree!

We’re lighting up the Elmendorph! We wanted to spread some holiday cheer, so we put up lights and candles in each window, which we will light up tonight. The roping is courtesy of Battenfeld's Christmas Tree Farm. They also donated a beautiful Christmas tree, which we have set up on the Elmendorph Green. We will need the community’s help to decorate it and more details about this project will come!

Happy Thanksgiving! Though it’s been a tough year, we are thankful for all our friends and family. Thanksgiving is a time of remembrance, and in 1860, one writer from the Red Hook Journal reflected on a similar year of epidemic, finding joy in community: When we look back upon the past year we cannot but see that it has been to this community a prosperous, and in most respects ,a happy one.Peace and plenty have prevailed. Every department of business has flourished, and the... fields, the gardens and the fruit trees have groaned and glistened beneath their burden of products for our sustenance and gratification. In freedom from disease and death we have been a favored people. While in neighboring towns many a household has been made sad and many a mother‘s heart been torn with anguish at the loss of loved and cherished ones, by a fearful epidemic, this neighborhood has been preserved from its ravages, and comparatively few have been called to mourn the loss of friends. #redhookny
