Born April 15, 1452, near the Tuscan town of Vinci in Italy, Leonardo da Vinci was an artist and inventor. As an artist, da Vinci's best-known works are the Mona Lisa, and The Last Supper, which is the most reproduced piece of religious art ever created. 90 years ago today, on April 14 1931, as King Alfonso XIII fled the country, Spain proclaimed what it's known as the Second Republic. The new government implemented sweeping reforms that included the opening of some 10,000 schools, agrarian reform, as well as measures to advance workers' and women's rights. Later that year, the Constitution of 1931 was approved. It was one of the most advanced documents of its time: it recognized the separation of church and state, introd...uced female suffrage, civil marriage and divorce, and provided the frame for regional autonomy. In was in place until 1939, when General Francisco Franco declared victory at the end of the Spanish Civil war (1936-1939) and installed a fascist state that lasted until his death in 1975. There would not be another constitution in Spain until 1977. https://elpais.com//la-segunda-republica-un-sueno-democrat See more
