In celebration and commemoration of Juneteenth, we want to recognize how important the past month has been for the Black community both within our walls, and outside. Juneteenth signifies the date in which enslaved Blacks in Texas were finally set free in 1865, two and a half years after the executive order of Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was signed. The cause of delay for the freeing of slaves can be directly correlated to the lack of representation. They had... no elected officials, no voices, and no advocates. Comparatively, the recent protests/movements have significantly elevated awareness of the ways in which injustice is still perpetuated against the Black community. What is different today is that along with this visibility, we are seeing advocacy amongst allies in ways we have never seen before.
