Ms. Candy D. came into a shelter at the end of 2015, with only part time employment at a local food service restaurant. Ms. D met with employment services and had her resume updated and submitted to Burger King. She interviewed with Burger King less than 2 months later and was hired only days after as a crew member. She is now working full time and on the path to moving into permanent housing.
Joshua M. is a homeless Spanish/English speaking 22 year old young man with a family that was having trouble finding employment. Two months ago, our employment team secured a permanent job for Joshua doing demolition work in Brooklyn. Joshua has now been employed for 2 months and was recently promoted to team leader, heading a group of 5 workers, earning $600 a week. He and his family are now eligible for Housing Assistance Programs and are eagerly looking forward to move into permanent housing.
Khandra W. was admitted to our Bronx housing facility in August 2015. She had previous employment background in Customer Service/ Retails Sales. She was very motivated to obtain employment and thus be able to once again get on with her life. While in our Employment Services Workshop/Assessment program, Ms. W.'s resume was revised to highlight her skill set and abilities and she was very active in the mock interview process, thus enhancing her interviewing abilities. Ms. W. was then issued a referral for Dress for Success to get an outfit for interviewing. She was sent on several job interviews during her stay with us and has secured employment.
Mr. Josiah M. was admitted to one of our shelters in October 2015. He had some scant experience working in gardening and landscaping. Unfortunately, he also had a previous criminal record. Employment staff wasted no time enrolling him in our job preparation program. He had no resume and very limited interviewing skills. We helped him prepare a resume, coached him in improving his interviewing abilities and gave him the constant encouragement he needed after each unsuccessful job interview to help him maintain his self-confidence. After each unsuccessful interview, our employment team honed in on any apparent weaknesses and helped him overcome them. Josiah is now employed full time as a logistics manager at a Bronx warehouse.
