This is little Millie and her folks. We’ve been helping Millie get her crate/housebreaking/don’t eat the cat game on since the day she arrived. Everyone, gather round and meet Mikey. This baby is a 4.5 month old mini dachshund and you know we love to these kids around here! Mikey is an extremely bright, patient and food motivated boy that I’ve had the privilege of watching grow up. Mikey has a wonderfully loving mom and he’s been on that crate training, house breaking and obedience since day ONE. She even gave us the privilege of guiding her breeder choice and consulting on which pup she would take home. She really ...nailed it y’all. She really did. At 4.5 months he has a solid place command, knows his sits/downs/stays and will to go to his crate and wait patiently before being released to eat his meals. Sweet Obi stayed with us in October for our board and train program. He’s a good boy with an over excitement problem. When new people are near he would jump up, nibble hands, squeak (A LOT) and even pee (a little). He would rarely if ever hold still and his restlessness was palpable. . Since his main struggle was overstimulation our focus was a mix of impulse control, play and conditioned relaxation. Among other methods we utilized an exercise called The Behavioral Down (Tra...ining Between The Ears) to help teach him complete rest. It’s proven very helpful w super anxious dogs. It took a lot of time and dedication but we finally got him there. . Obi, like so many brilliant Aussies we meet, already had a killer portfolio of tricks so we didn’t need to teach much in the way of sits and stays. Our work was on calming/balancing his general state of mind. The working lineage of this breed demands serious hyper vigilance and its our job to let them know when they’re off the clock. . Obi made HUGE strides with us. He can sleep in and be quiet in the crate, walks nicely on leash, isn’t jumping on folks at the dog park and even though he still gets excited when his dads girlfriend visits, he settles quickly and isn’t a mood killer. . Obi is a young, high strung Aussie pup so he’ll have a lifetime of work to do around this. Luckily he has a super dedicated dad and we continue to do our follow up sessions today. BRUNCH DOG LEVEL ACHIEVED!Ash has been in for a board and train this month. She goes home tomorrow so we came to her neighborhood to see how she would do in her normal environment (which is a busier neighborhood than mine). Ash had struggled with being fearful in high stimulation environments, stalking other pups on her walks and the squirrels...how ones arm would hurt w her and squirrels. . Today we went shopping at Bike and Air, had brunch at Weekends and chilled and in t...he park. She greets people politely, doesn’t stalk dogs and has great impulse control now. If she gets scared we do some obedience drills and it brings her back to zero. She isn’t a perfect robot bc I don’t want to make those but she’s a polite, confident gal in public and calm at home. Learning to juggle with Place. Here I’m trying to have all three dogs hold place and come individually when I call each one of them by name. All three dogs are extremely food motivated and live in exciting multi dog house holds so I thought this exercise in impulse control would be good for them. I also wanted to take video footage of me working with them to see where I could communicate more clearly. We had been working on this for a bit, so we were all tiring out here. HOWE...VER, I will say that this exercise was very difficult and required many reps to work even when it did. I take time lapse of these bc I knew how many reps it would take. Be patient with yourselves and with your pup! I’d like to Introduce the fine members of the first ever Hustlepups pack walk training social club! Thank you to @pei.liew for allowing us all to join her and her awesome dog Diamond for this opportunity! In this pic we have three leash reactive pups. The shorty on the end is Babka, HPNYC’s own Ralph in the middle and Diamond Tiana on the end. All three dogs are questionable when on leash near other dogs on the busy streets. Diamond and Babka’s parents have put in tons of tim...e working with counter conditioning, structured walks, reps, and patience. At first we were afraid that they would never walk with or near other dogs. It was too stressful. Fortunately we’re proving that wrong. We’re so proud of their progress and I look forward to continue building it! . . Ps. Our personal dog Ralph suffers/suffered from fairly serious leash reactivity himself. Through working with @katescaninesllc and dedicating our whole selves to learning his body language and advocating for him, Ralph has gone from Giant Liability to Demo Dog. Everyone please meet Riley. She’s at HQ for our three week board and train program. Riley struggles with general insecurity, separation anxiety, housebreaking and a host of other tics. Unfortunately, insecurity/anxiety can manifest itself in outward displays of fear aggression if challenged. Riley doesn’t want to be aggressive but she will resort to teeth if she feels she has to.
