Hello Dear Members and Friends, The Hispanic Women's League is helping the Confident Girl Mentoring Program (#GirlsChoices) recruit girls between the ages of 13 -19 to participate in a program called Seventeen Days (formerly called What Could You Do?) This program is a theory-based interactive video that presents the viewer with different scenarios involving decisions that young women face in relationships. The goal of #GirlsChoices is to prevent HIV and STIs by improving the...ir confidence, self-esteem and give participants the power to mentally practice various techniques and use their voice in a way that will help shape their future. The video is about 45 minutes and is designed to give youth an opportunity to mentally practice various techniques and assist in making informed decisions when faced with compromising situations. Enclosed you will find full information and permission slip for families. As a bonus, each participant will receive a $10 gift card once completed (provided by #GirlsChoices). How it would work: If you are interested, please send the following information along with the signed permission slip located here https://drive.google.com//107wJMCvWwh_TIOWfIXkgADR_M/view to [email protected] Student Full name Current School Birthday Grade level Race Ethnicity Email Address Each participant will receive their own access code to watch the video utilizing an electronic device (cell phone, computer, etc.). The student will then log in to a platform using their own code. Once completed, the Girl Mentoring Program team will set up a follow-up group discussion to answer any questions or refer/link to additional services. The deadline to complete the program is Thursday, 12/31/2020. Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions. All questions will be referred to The Girl Mentoring Program. Please feel free to pass this information to your friends and family as this is open to the public.

It is Hispanic Heritage Month, a time the Office of Minority Health - U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also uses to serve as a platform for creating... awareness of health disparities that persist among Hispanics. One of the largest? Sleep Health. Did you know that 14% of Hispanic Men and 6% of Hispanic women could have a potentially, undiagnosed life-threatening health condition known as Sleep Apnea? According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention it has been linked to some of the leading causes of illness and death among Hispanics, including heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes. Hispanics with Sleep Apnea have a 40% higher chance of hypertension and 90% higher risk of diabetes. Current health initiatives often fail to recognize sleep health as a pillar of health and to provide interventions designed to educate the public on the value of getting screened and/or diagnosed for this medical sleep disorder to both prevent the onset of medical conditions and to manage current health. Our mission at START WITH SLEEP is to provide the education needed to help improve health outcomes in this population and to advocate for consistent screening as part of the healthcare model. If you have trouble sleeping or are feeling tired all the time it is time to start the conversation about ways to improve your sleep. Visit us online at www.startwithsleep.com

HWL response to COVID-19. The attached describes status on current HWL operation and decision on all events for the rest fo 2020. We hope to see many of you online in the near future as we work towards some virtual events and safe ways to support our WNY community. We are all on this together!
Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms! May you find new ways to celebrate today as we continue to adjust to the new rhythm of our days. We celebrate and recognize all the mothers that continue to disproportionately take on more. During these challenging times, this often means childcare, home-schooling without outside help, preparing 3 meals at home each day, increased time spent on eldercare while working from home or actively looking for a job or finding ways to keep their sma...ll business alive. To show our appreciation to those fighting against COVID-19, HWL is donating Mother's Day Manicure sets, from Rejuvinex Spa, to 10 Essential Workers. We asked members to nominate 10 Essential Workers to receive a Mother's Day Manicure set. We invite you to read a brief description of each of the 10 women that continue to fight to keep us safe in WNY. Thank you for what you do.
It's with regret that we have to inform you that we have decided to cancel/postpone all of our March events at this time to ensure everyone's safety. We feel it best to follow the precautionary measures recommended by the Department of Health and State Government due to the current unknown status of the COV-19 coronavirus. We know this may be a confusing time but it is important to understand that everything that is currently happening is a proactive way to restrict the sprea...d of the virus into our community. While it is understandably stressful, we are thankful that there are so many dedicated individuals working towards a solution and continuing to share accurate education and best practices to protect our city. If you have any questions or concerns about what you are hearing make sure to look to reliable sources from the CDC or Erie County Department of Health. It is also a good idea to remember even if schools close to follow the guidelines below: Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Practice social distancing. Do not go into areas with large groups of people. Stay home when you are sick. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. Thank you for your understanding. We will post rescheduled dates as we know more information.
This event is POSTPONED till further notice!
