MICHAEL SORKIN It is precisely during times like these that we need a sublime voice of integrity and clarity more than ever. Michael Sorkin owned that voice like no one else, and we miss him so much. As an architect and designer, Michael cultivated the urban landscape, tilling the asphalt of cities around the world and planting seeds of social and environmental fairness. His unique practice built social infrastructures and fostered public forums with proposals for dynamic cit...ies that celebrate the ‘unpredictable behavior of people’ and ‘complex ecologies’ of the city. Michael lived his vision of urban justice every day - through his vibrant drawings, discerning texts, razor-sharp lectures, biting humor, and tantalizing encounters with everyone he met. He was so much more than a loyal friend, teacher, colleague and mentor to thousands, perhaps millions of us, whose work and lives have been inspired and propelled forward by his honesty, curiosity and generosity. He was an advocate of the highest order, constantly connecting people to other people, places and ideas. At faculty meetings he would spontaneously nominate random colleagues to collaborate on tasks or opportunities that ultimately fostered other initiatives to promote social, urban and environmental equity in ways that none of us, except perhaps Michael, could anticipate. It is incumbent upon us all to honor Michael’s legacy, urban imagination, civic integrity, boundless intellect and of course, his inimitable way with words, by perpetuating his profoundly righteous project of the city, each in our own way. - - - - - #terreformur #urbandesign #architecturelovers #architecture_magazine #villagevoice #architectsnewspaper #citiesforpeople
Another loss in the architecture community. Michael McKinnell age 84, has died due to COVID-19. He made a selfless decision not use the much in demand ventilator and opted for Hospice instead. His best known project is the Boston City Hall that he along with his partner designed and won in a competition in 1962. Slide through his beautiful drawings and photo. The last thing he designed was his grave from his death described to his wife over the phone: a simple granite slab with their names in a field of white roses. #michaelmckinnell #bostoncityhall #boston #architecture #architect #building #structure
