UPDATE 2: We noticed that a few people are suggesting a Wesleyan student could be responsible. We have no idea yet who took the flag, and are in no way suggest...ing it was a student. Even if it was, that in no way reflects on the entire student body. In fact, over the last several years we have worked with numerous Wesleyan athletes for our annual Christmas Toy Drive. Their generosity, and the generosity of the student body as a whole, has been unmatched, and we value the relationships we’ve built with them over the years. Please don’t make assumptions or accuse specific people without facts. UPDATE: We are blown away and truly humbled at the sheer volume of people from around the state and country who have messaged us asking if they can replace the flag or donate in some way. We never imagined so many people would be touched by this event and want to help. With that said, we didn’t post this to ask for help. We were simply trying to shed light on the fact that a) the thin red line stands for honoring fallen members; and b) don’t touch what doesn’t belong to you. We have already replaced the flag that was taken. However, IF you wish to do something to honor what the flag stands for, we suggest you consider making a donation to any of the following charities: The IAFF Fallen Firefighters Memorial https://foundation.iaff.org/iaff-memorial/ The Connecticut Fallen Firefighters Memorial https://portal.ct.gov//G/Connecticut-Firefighters-Memorial Or, since we can all agree that 2020 has impacted so many people, any local charity that you feel would honor the memory and sacrifice of those members who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Because ultimately as firefighters and first responders as a whole, we get into this line of work to serve and help. We thank you again, and have a great evening. To the individual or individuals that took the thin red line flag off of our engine yesterday: Hi! Allow us to formally introduce ourselves. We are the men and women of Middletown Professional Firefighters Local 1073. You probably saw some of us yesterday at around 2:20 on High Street. We were there because someone had an oven fire in one of the campus buildings. We aren’t sure if you are a student or just a concerned citizen, but in either case, something is bugging us. We’re not sure why, but you must have really admired the sweet thin red line flag on Engine 2, because you climbed up on the tailboard and cut it off and stole it. (The pictures really tell the story). I mean, you must really admire it to risk climbing on city property, being caught on camera, and taking something that isn’t yours. We have to assume you really liked the flag, or maybe you thought it might be funny or cool, you know, something for the ‘Gram or the Tik Tok. We’re a little worried that you might have cut it down to fight oppression or whatever. If that was your motivator, you clearly don’t understand the meaning behind the thin red line. You see, that symbol and the associated flag represent the way WE (and our brother and sister firefighters around the world) choose to honor the sacrifices made by those members who have gone before us. Those sacrifices usually mean one of us or our brothers/sisters laying down their life for a person in need. Because that’s the thing about firefighters - no matter what your issue and no matter who you are, if you call, we come. We don’t care what your income is, your ethnicity, your gender, or who you voted for in the last election. We take an oath to help those in need, and that flag represents those who have paid the ultimate price trying to stay true to their oath. The same can be said for the thin blue line flag. The thin red line flag isn’t a political statement. We get that some people have an issue with the American flag and the thin blue and even the thin red line these days. But honestly, even if that was your motivator, taking something that doesn’t belong to you is stealing - and stealing is wrong. Maybe your folks didn’t teach you that. Just a head’s up, trespassing and damaging city property are also kind of frowned upon by the establishment and all. Don’t worry though, we’ve reached out to the President of Wesleyan (as it happened on campus), Mayor Ben Florsheim, Wesleyan Public Safety, and Middletown PD. If they get a chance to talk to you, they’ll explain it. So here’s the thing. You took something that doesn’t belong to you. Your reasons are really irrelevant. We understand you may view the flag differently than we do. And see that’s the beautiful thing about being an American - you can think that. But the flip side of that freedom is we get to respectfully disagree with you on it. Sadly, that type of respectful disagreement is kind of lost these days, and that’s a shame. But where you lose us is, and you’re not gonna like hearing this, but ripping down stuff or silencing voices that differ from yours just because you don’t like or agree with the message you think they convey (right or wrong), doesn’t make you justified or a hero. Those actions are legit characteristics of Fascism. You can Google it if you don’t believe me. Be that as it may, we have a suggestion. If you truly feel that you’re fighting the good fight, the next time you want to deface and steal our property, stand by your convictions. Be a grown up and wait til we’re outside and do it for the whole world to see. Otherwise, you’re not brave, you’re not a freedom fighter, and you’re not a hero. You’re a coward. Those flags were purchased and installed by us with our money. We’ve already replaced it, but at a minimum, you owe us a new flag. Don’t worry, we take Venmo. If you would like to return it, you can feel free to do so at fire headquarters. We’re here 24/7/365. And don’t worry, if you have an emergency and call 911 - we’ll still come. That’s what we do.

Engine 3 was detailed to help check a new hydrant that was put in service at a recent construction site. After flushing the hydrant and attaching the gates to check the flow they noticed a drop in pressure and funny noises. Once they removed the gates they found a tape measure jammed in the 2.5 discharge.

149 years ago today the Great Chicago Fire began. The blaze raged for 2 days, and killed between 200 and 300 people, destroyed 17,450 buildings, left 100,000 ho...meless and caused an estimated $200 million (4 billion in today's dollars) in damage. The Fire Prevention Week that we observe every year is scheduled to coincide with the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire.

The reason Local 596 keeps fighting for better staffing. Well said PFANJ. Elizabeth, NJ - Advanced fire on arrival, along with multiple people confirmed trapped in the rear of the store. This is why we fight so hard for proper supervision and staffing! The amount of split second decision making can quickly overwhelm an incident commander or company officer when they are not given adequate personnel to complete necessary tasks. 2 Chief officers and 4 companies were immediately committed to the rescue operation in the rear. Sadly 3 children and one adult lost their lives, even in the wake of absolute heroic actions. https://www.facebook.com/clara1963martinez/videos/10224357032499318/?extid=0&d=n
