News: Eviction Update U.S. CDC Extends Eviction ban through June 30, 2021 . . The order applies to individual renters who do not expect to earn more than $99,00...0 this year or $198,000 for joint filers. It also applies to renters who did not report income in 2020 or received a stimulus check. . . Renters must file sworn declarations saying eviction would leave them homeless or force them into a shared living setting and attest they have done all they can to get government assistance for rent or housing. Drivers Beware of Scooters Drivers are being warned to watch out for scooters after a number of tragic accidents. In July, three people were killed after being involved in a Revel scooter crash. Revel is a service that provides electric scooter sharing in multiple cities throughout the country. Revel responded to the uptick in crashes by shutting down operations in NYC for the time being. Electric scooters provide a convenient form of transportation and entertainment. However..., they do not require any extra training to rent, and many inexperienced first-time riders do not know how to properly operate these vehicles that travel up to 30 mph. Despite signs warning riders to wear helmets, many riders are spotted without this safety equipment. Also, even though riders are not supposed to ride on sidewalks, Revel suspended riders for this purpose and not wearing helmets. Rideshare drivers are encouraged to keep a careful eye out for electric scooters. Vehicles may be hard to spot and may come out of unexpected locations like between cars. City Officials Lower Speed Limits Across NYC As Fatalities Mount City officials report that more drivers, passengers, and motorcyclists have been killed already this year than the entire calendar year last year. So far, 28 drivers, 16 passengers, and 26 motorcyclists have died in city motor vehicle accidents. Officials say that reckless driving is a large part of the problem. When the stay-at-home order was implemented, the roadways were largely cleared, which inspired some p...eople to street race or otherwise drive at excessive speeds. While officials believed that these activities would decline as the city reopened, the rate of fatal collisions has not reduced. Officials have responded by reducing the speed limits on nine busy roadways in New York City, including: Riverside Drive in Manhattan Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn Shore Parkway Service Road in Brooklyn Dahlgren Place in Brooklyn Northern Boulevard in Queens Rockaway Boulevard in Queens Brucker Boulevard in the Bronx Webster Avenue in the Bronx Targee Street in Staten Island If you get stopped for speeding on one of these roads, we can help you fight the traffic ticket and defend your livelihood. New Traffic Court Rules Favor Cops’ Safety Over Drivers As if the disparity between drivers and law enforcement officers was not already clear enough, New York City traffic courts are going even further by allowing cops to literally phone in their testimony while requiring motorists to appear in person or face due process violations. During the last month, seven of the eight Traffic Violations Bureaus offices reopened across the give boroughs. The rush to reopen is likely spu...rred by financial motives, with the City wanting to reclaim some of its lost revenues during the pandemic. Traffic cops are now being allowed to call into hearings and share evidence over the phone. However, ticketed drivers are not allowed this same right and instead must decide between appearing in person and potentially risking their health or only providing written testimony before the hearing. Motorists and attorneys who have recently visited the TVB offices report bathrooms are unclean, social distancing is not observed, and there is no plexiglass safeguard between the driver and the judge. Our drivers are facing enough stress dealing with a traffic ticket that could impact their ability to earn a living, they shouldn’t have to risk their health and safety as well. Jim Conigliaro Attorney and Founder of the IDG said. If you have been ticketed, contact us for help finding a solution that protects your rights and safety. Drivers Beware: Governor Cracks Down on Speeders Governor Cuomo announced a state-wide initiative called Speed Awareness Week that is backed by local law enforcement efforts to increase patrols to crack down on speeding. The campaign is supported by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. The week will feature a No Excuses public service announcement that discusses the penalty for speeding. There will also be signs on the roadway that alert motorists to the dangers of sp...eeding. These types of campaigns often help the state rake in funds to help cover expenses of police stations by issuing massive amounts of tickets to unsuspecting drivers. While speeding can make it take longer to stop a vehicle and avoid a crash, having this type of campaign during a global pandemic may not be the best option to protect the health of drivers who may be subjected to being in close contact with a law enforcement officer during a routine traffic stop. Additionally, miles are down statewide due to the pandemic, so the campaign that targets summer drivers may not be as effective this year as in previous years. The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee hosts various campaigns throughout the year, but, hopefully, it will consider the health of drivers when planning future events this year.
