Course Description: This course uses intergroup dialogue to e...xplore various systems of oppression, power and privilege. Intergroup dialogue (IGD) is an innovative educational model that brings together students from diverse social identities in a small group, learning environment. IGD often involves members of groups with a history of conflict or limited opportunities to engage in deep and meaningful discussion of controversial, challenging, or divisive issues. This course is organized around multi-disciplinary readings (e.g., historical, sociological, psychological, and personal narratives), experiential learning activities, group projects, weekly writing and summative reflections. There will also be an emphasis on current events or hot topics sessions that allows students to analyze trending topics on social media. The overall goal is to create a setting for students to engage in open and constructive dialogue concerning issues of intergroup relations, conflict, and community as well as developing the ability to move towards action.
