Back in 1970, Ilion’s soon to be tallest building was under construction on what was then W. State Street. The eight story structure would become a place for se...nior citizen housing and given the historic name London Towers. Before Ilion became an incorporated village in 1852, the western part of this area was known as London. This 1970 photo shows the high-rise building nearly half complete. It would open in June 1971. A fixture of London Towers is the three feet diameter clock at the top of the building facing W. Main Street. Original plans called for the clock, but the project was federally funded and money could not be used for the timepiece. As a gift to the new building, the Ilion Board of Light Commissioners donated the funds necessary to install the clock. Purchased for $1,000 from Standard Electric Corporation in Springfield, MA, the clock was installed by Ryan-McCaffrey Corporation and McCoy Electric.
