Political satire about our administration ending up in prison is all well and good, but there are real issues at stake in our community. While many of us are celebrating World Pride this week, and 50 years of the LGBT liberation movement, there are some of our sisters who cannot celebrate with us. Transgender women of color are still being incarcerated at higher rates, for lesser crimes, and are usually subjected to cruel and unusual punishment in the prison system. Accor...ding to statistics collected by Lambda Legal, In the United States, nearly one in six transgender women, and nearly 50% of transgender women of color, have been in the prison system at some point. Often, transgender women are not given a voice in their trials, and are subjected to bias in the courtroom just because of who they are, and what our society sometimes forces them to do to survive. Please take a moment to support the Anti Violence Project, the Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP), or Lambda Legal, and help them get justice and freedom for our transgender sisters.
