Summer is over but there are multiple reasons why we should encourage our clients and patients to continue resistance trainings! Here’s a great post by #Bros_MD regarding a psychological effect from resistant training. _ #physicaltherapy #continueingeducation #resistancetraining #exercise #depression

Knee ROM is crucial for overall lower extremity function. Here are some words of wisdoms from Mike R.: Losing knee extension range of motion is common with knee injuries, especially after surgeries. I often perform low load, long duration stretching to restore knee extension. One of the most popular ways to do this is with the prone hang exercise (bottom image). I’ve always disliked this position, as it is way more uncomfortable for the patient. They end up squirming aroun...d and compensating at their pelvis, taking away the benefit of the drill. Instead, simple perform this LLLD stretch supine. Prop the heel up with an ankle weight or even a towel roll, and drape an ankle weight over the distal thigh, right above the knee. Way more comfortable and easier to hold this position without compensation for 8-15 minutes as needed. #physical #therapy #physicaltherapy #physiotherapy #rehab #rehabilitation #neckpain #headache #TMJ #jawpain #chronicpain #Orthopedic #manual #manualtherapy #manualtherapist #evidencebased #newyork #nyc #newyorkcity #pain #painrelief @ New York, New York See more

Your body will adapt to what is continuously demanded of it. If the majority of your day involves being in one position, such as sitting at your desk or in an Uber, or standing at a checkout or reception desk, your body will change to allow you to do these things well. In these examples, most likely lengthening and shortening of the muscles that help to hold you in these positions like your hip flexors or glutes. If you really want your 30min/day mobility gains to stick, you ...need to put your body in those positions as often as possible or it won't bother to maintain them. Things like an interchangeable sit/stand desk and taking regular breaks to move or walk can help. If your work makes this difficult you'll need to make sure that every chance you get to move or put your body in different positions outside of work is used. Tendinopathy is a common diagnosis we encounter, yet the treatment information is sightly delayed in practice compared to the research. This is a great read by #trustme_ed: "If you’re still just thinking Alfredson's eccentric heel drops when it comes to tendon rehabilitation then its time to do some PD. Tendinopathy management is evolving year to year but current research shows progressive loading is still the gold standard. No cookie cutter approach and all should have an in...dividual program based on assessment! Isometrics progressed to isotonics followed by energy storage work and return to sport specific drills is commonly seen but will depend on nature of tendon injury and stage. Also important to manage the psychosocial aspects of tendon injuries. Often fear of loading, uncertainty around scan results, injury progression and the affect it has on exercise participation and lifestyle. #physical #therapy #physicaltherapy #physiotherapy #rehab #rehabilitation #neckpain #headache #TMJ #jawpain #chronicpain #Orthopedic #manual #manualtherapy #manualtherapist #evidencebased #newyork #nyc #newyorkcity #pain #painrelief See more

It is evident that physical therapy cannot get too far without patient’s own exercise programs. Prescribing exercises and movement is one thing, however following up and making sure that there is a meaningful carryover and progress is another thing. Make sure you are not fitting your patient into an exercise, however putting customized exercises for that particular patient. The thoracic spine is the longest region of the spine, and by some measures it is also the most complex. Connecting with the cervical spine above and the lumbar spine below, the thoracic spine runs from the base of the neck down to the abdomen. It is the only spinal region attached to the rib cage. A lot of times, answers lie within our patients’ own words. Patients and physical therapist believe a mix of interpersonal and practical skills are important factors which influence their working relationship. Research has shown the strength of this relationship influences treatment satisfaction and outcome. Therefore, seeking out care from physical therapists that understand and possess these skills is recommended to anyone considering outpatient physical therapy as a treatment option. The lower trap is a very important muscle that is often weak in many individuals. The main role of the lower trap is to upwardly rotate and posteriorly tilt the scapula. Those are both key motions during many functional activities in both normal like and sports (Reinold et al, 2009). We put heavy emphasis on this muscle since it is closely connected to a lot of symptoms in the neck and shoulder.
