Today, #InternationalHolocaustRemembranceDay, marks 76 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. 76 years later, we are facing a rising tide of violent hate right here in the United States. Antisemitic incidents reached an all-time high in 2019, per the ADL. 2019 also marked the deadliest year on record for hate crimes, while white supremacist and other far-right violence hit historic levels. Just a few weeks ago, far-right insurrectionists wore Camp Auschwitz shirt...s and carried white supremacist flags as they violently attacked the U.S. Capitol. It’s not hard to see the alarming parallels with the past. We are facing a crisis of extremism. But we have the tools to fight back. Today, on its second full day in office, the Biden administration already began taking concrete steps to assess and address the crisis of violent white supremacy and far-right extremism. There is so much that can be done right now, using the tools that the federal government already has. I don’t think I appreciated when we brought this [Charlottesville] case the degree to which it has become a harbinger of so many of the troubling things we are seeing in our country today.
