What does it mean to remember? Today, Thursday, April 8th is Holocaust Remembrance day. It's a day that should not just past by on the calendar without a call to pause, reflect, mourn, honor, and remember. There are countless stories to be told, and names that cannot be forgotten. I've had the exceptional opportunity throughout my life to engage with many of the stories of families who went through the Holocaust in theatrical productions that helped me to empathize and c...onnect with this harrowing time in our history. This past year, I got to direct and tell the story of the Welisch family who escaped Nazi persecution in Austria to the Philippines only to find themselves facing a whole new experience of being displaced. The show is called "Displyest" based off of the phonetic Hebrew pronunciation of the word. Displeyst is inspired by the diary of Margaret Welisch and her family who survived Nazi persecution in Austria, only to find themselves in the middle of warfare when the Japanese invaded the Philippines. The story is one of perseverance, trauma, tradition and love fighting against hate. We worked on this show during this pandemic where we often couldn't be together, and found ways to connect and tell the story.
