We are excited to announce our newest venture, the Jamestown Public Market blog! We will be posting bi-monthly on all things food system related. Check our our first post!

A CSA is a great way to enjoy fresh, seasonal produce this year! Take a look at Sauntering Roots Farm’s CSA options for the 2021 season! You pay ahead, and are guaranteed delicious produce as it’s freshly picked week after week!

Our gardening enthusiast friends, it’s winter, and I don’t know about you, but we miss gardening. As we all know January in WNY is not prime growing season. But does this mean you *can’t* grow anything? We think that’s debatable. Enter cold frames. They’re the best bet for extending the growing season on the fall or spring ends of summer. Cold frame dos: * Do make sure that wind and snow can’t get into your box. * Do make sure to plant hardy cold loving plants, looking ...at you spinach and kale. To be honest, those are probably the only two you’ll be successful with here until probably April. * Do reuse old materials when building your cold frame. These are made of scrap wood and old window pains. As long as the light can get through it’s a suitable lid for your cold frame. * Do put your cold frames in direct sunlight, the more hours of sunlight the better for winter gardens. Gotta take advantage of every photosynthesis opportunity possible. Cold frame don’ts: * don’t forget to check your frames a few times a week. Obviously in January the probability of your frames overheating and drying out is low, but a nice 40 degree day of sunshine might do it, so keep a close watch. On full sun days you may want to prop your frame open to keep everything inside happy and not too hot. Ventilation on warmer days (over 40) is so important. * Don’t forget to keep the lids clear of snow, ice, or anything else that would prevent light from getting in! The sun has to kiss those leaves somehow! Ways to set up your cold frames: * use your summer time raised beds with an old window or glass pane on top. * Hay bales are super insulating, so lining the edges of your beds is always a great way to keep your frames warm. Just plop the lid on top and make sure that there aren’t any gaping holes for the wind to get in. We hope this inspires our gardening friends to get out there and start your season early. Our Mobile Market keeps on chugging thanks to the support of committed community organizations. As title sponsor for the 2020 season, The Chautauqua Center hosted one of most successful MM sites to date. Their support also assisted us in launching a unique program, CHQ Veggie RX. In partnership with TCC healthcare providers, we were able to 'prescribe' fruit and veggie servings to individuals lacking fresh food access. We can't wait to see wait 2021 brings!
