William Jenack’s auction of April 22, 2019 proved that the Chinese market is still strong and even a piece of brown furniture surprised the audience and auctioneer. Chinese lots that exceeded expectations included a pair of Famille Jaune decorated vases mounted as lamps selling above the high estimate at $488.00; a pair of Chinese style cast stone Foo dogs bested their high estimate selling at $977.00; a carved stone pagoda doubled its high estimate hammering down at $690.0...0 with another more than tripling its high estimate at $488.00; two pairs of Chinese decorated porcelain panels mounted in hand carved wood frames soared past their presale estimate of $300-$500.00 after a fierce battle between the internet and a phone bidder in California they finally hammered down at $8050.00 and $10,350.00 pair; a reticulated bronze censer having a presale estimate of $80-$120.00 sold for $517.00; a bronze recumbent deer with a ruyi branch tripled its high estimate selling for $1092.00; carved marble head of Buddha sold at $632.00; a Chinese Export style painting of Hong Kong and Victoria Harbor sold for $2124.00; a peach bloom decorated porcelain brush was topped its high estimate selling at $402.00 and an unusual scholars rock on stand nearly doubled its high estimate at $920.00. Other outstanding lots include a water color by David Levine (American 1926-2009) more than doubled its high estimate, selling to the artist’s son, for $2990.00; a Murano glass chandelier by Ve Art Artemide sold over its high estimate at $1035.00; an Italian School oil on artist board bearing the signature F. Casorati doubled its high estimate selling at $690.00; a Hilton McConnico Rouille design area rug bested its high estimate at $575.00 and a pair of cut blue stone benches quadrupled their high estimate selling at $2185.00. And now the one piece of brown furniture that shocked the auctioneers and audience was a Regency carved walnut console table with integral writing surface, a presale estimate of $240-$300.00, sold for $8555.00 to an in-house bidder after a intense battle with another in-house bidder, both dealers that obviously had issues with each other! After the sale the buyer stated that he believed it to be by Thomas Seymour the noted cabinet maker of the Boston area in the late 18th/19th century. See more
