Jericho Road was recently featured in Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)'s weekly Primary Health Care Digest! "Jericho Road Community Health Center (Buffalo, NY) is playing a pivotal role in responding to the pandemic and providing seamless primary health care to its more than 20,000 patients, who are primarily low-income residents. The Western New York communities it serves have seen some of the highest positive test rates in the state. But thanks to HRSA fu...nding, Jericho Road has made noteworthy strides to help protect its patients. Additionally, Jericho Road increased access to COVID-19 testing by offering community testing days, rapid testing, and door-to-door testing to target hard hit communities. It held more than 30 outdoor community testing days for both patients and other community members; many attended by more than 300 people. It also used HRSA funding to purchase Cepheid machines, giving it the ability to not only swab for COVID-19 onsite at their clinics, but to run the test onsite. When COVID-19 cases started showing up in March, the health center swiftly reconfigured its clinics to have separate well units, for patients not infected by COVID-19, and isolation units, for patients who are positive or potentially positive for COVID-19. Each section has its own entrances and exits as well as separate teams. According to Chief Medical Officer Allana Krolikowski, MD, these isolation units help to reassure patients of the clinic’s safety and mitigate a drop in patient visits."

For those who can, stay home. (We know some people have to turn up in person for work - many of us do too!) Please remember, this virus is widespread in Western New York. That means that anyone you're in contact with could have this virus, even if they don't look or feel sick. Don't assume that "other people" are spreading COVID-19 but that your office-mates, friends, and family are somehow immune. At Jericho Road, mask wearing is 100% mandatory all the time, even in our non-medical offices. Stay home. If you can't stay home, wear your mask and keep your distance. We can all do these things because that's what communities do. As some wise men once said, "Be excellent to each other." We will get through this.

Wow. Our minds are blown and our hearts are full. A total of 94 donors came together to absolutely smash our #GivingTuesday goal of $5,000 to upgrade our #ViveShelter computer lab into a remote learning classroom. You have now raised over $14,000 for this project! Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this campaign! We are looking forward to making the remote classroom even better than we originally planned. All funds raised over the original goal will be used toward the children's program at Vive! You can still make an investment at bit.ly/GT4ViveEd.

We are officially three weeks away from #GivingTuesday, which is taking place on Tuesday, December 1. On this international day of generosity, we are aiming to raise $5,000 to upgrade our computer lab into a positive learning environment for the 15 school-age children who are currently participating in remote learning at our #ViveShelter. As of this writing, 15 students in grades Pre-K through 12 participate in remote learning five days a week. None of them are in the same cl...ass or on the same schedule. While each student has their own iPad for remote learning, our two children's program staff members are not able to monitor 15 iPads at the same time. To help them, we will be purchasing a projector and screen so that all 15 classes can be projected on the screen together, allowing our staff to see them all at a glance. The projector will also be used for additional instruction for students who need extra support. In addition to the projector and screen, we will be ordering school-quality desks and chairs for our students. We are looking forward to upgrading our computer lab into a remote learning classroom and turning it into an environment that supports and promotes education. You can read more about the project or make an early gift at bit.ly/GT4ViveEd.

This is great! Congrats to our #ViveShelter residents who graduated from @716Ministries' Soft Skills Program last week! In this program, participants learn resume building, conflict resolution, time management, goal setting, budgeting, successful interviewing tactics, and more. All of these skills prepare residents for better placement and transition into the community when they move on from Vive. We're so grateful for this partnership with our friends at 716 Ministries.

We are SO proud. In a 2018 newsletter, we wrote about Kyaw "Jason" Suar's hard work in studying for and obtaining his U.S. citizenship with the help of one of our ESL tutors. Earlier this year, Jason asked our #ViveShelter staff for assistance in registering to vote. Yesterday, Jason voted for the first time! When asked how it felt, Jason said "really good" and that he was "really proud to take this responsibility." He said that everyone who has the ability to vote should take it seriously. We couldn't agree more. Congratulations on your first vote, Jason!

Get on out there and #vote! Polls are open til 9 p.m. in Erie County. If you're unsure of anything related to voting, check out International Institute of Buffalo's voting guide at iibuffalo.org/vote2020. If you haven't already voted, we hope that you will consider Jericho Road's top three issues today as you cast your ballot: 1. Humane and welcoming immigration policies for refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers. 2. Quality, affordable, and accessible healthcare for every... person in our country. 3. Honest reckoning with and robust plans to address systemic injustices that oppress Black Americans and other people of color in our country.

Earlier this month, we said goodbye to our chief operating officer, Dr. Ethan Gable. Dr. Gable has been connected to Jericho Road since he was a boy, first as a patient, then as a volunteer, and then as an employee in many roles including medical assistant, front office staff member, OB/GYN, chief medical officer, and chief operating officer. He and his family are moving out of the area and we wish them all well on their journey. We already miss you, Dr. Gable! We are delight...ed to announce that our former chief officer of administration and strategic partnerships, Magdalena Nichols, has taken Dr. Gable's place as COO! Maggie has been with Jericho Road since 2016, serving in various key leadership roles and steering many projects, including our expansion into the Broadway-Fillmore community at #1021Broadway. She has been instrumental in the growth and development of Jericho Road in Buffalo and overseas for the past four years and we know she will do a great job succeeding Dr. Gable as chief operating officer. A message from our founder and CEO, Dr. Myron Glick: What would Jesus do? More than 120 years ago, Charles Sheldon wrote a simple book titled In His Steps, where he discussed in vivid detail daily moral decisions that ordinary people were faced with. In each case, he posed the question, What would Jesus do? This book ended up attracting millions of readers, including myself as a young boy. Years later, this simple question became the reason that Joyce and I started Jerich...Continue reading
