Everything that goes on with a person goes on to affect their work, whether you seize it consciously and exploit it or ignore it or it crops up 5 years later. ... What’s in your dreams and how breakfast went. ... One is one’s work and one’s work is one’s self. -Helen Frankenthaler, May 1972 Portland State University College of the Arts ... I think it is better to doubt, to question. There is so much to create, to invent in the future. ...There are completely new concepts, completely different parameters that will give definitions of art, so why let others do it while we could do it ourselves and move forward, constantly advancing and challenging. That’s why I have so much respect for artists like Frank Stella who constantly wonders how he can go beyond himself. This excerpt is from an interview by @world.ar...t.foundations, in which Bernar Venet speaks about his move to NYC in 1966, with $150 in his pocket and no place to stay. He took this courageous step at the urging of his good friend, the artist Arman, who told him to go and fight to make it as an artist. After spending his 1st three weeks in the YMCA and the next four years doing battle, he finally mounted his first mid-career retrospective at the renowned New York Cultural Center - which was housed in the ever-so controversial building at 2 Columbus Circle - designed by Edward Durell Stone - now the home of the Museum of Art and Design. "We have a house near Parma We always every summer go down to the Morandi Museum in Bologna. [Morandi’s] work has so much humanity to it... so quiet, so thoughtful. [] I didn’t want a lot of noise. This is another element in the work I was trying to think about in terms of gesture (transcribed from his 2014 SVA Lecture). The work here is a monoprint, produced with Two Palms Press (@twopalmsny). Printmaking is a major force in Whitney’s career. When speaking of turning ...points for him as an artist, he often mentions the late 70s when he was invited to the print shop, Brandywine Workshop (@brandywine_workshop), in Philadelphia, and in the early 80s when he had the opportunity to work with the revered master printer Bob Blackburn (@efa.rbpmw). _________________ Be sure to listen to Stanley Whitney’s entire 2014 SVA (@svanyc) lecture here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zq-rTsQGkPk And another brilliant resource on Stanley Whitney and his work is the Bomb Magazine’s (@bombmag) Oral History Project: https://bombmagazine.org/articles/stanley-whitney/
