Join me this morning Wednesday April 7th for YOGA ON ZOOM 9:30am EST as we playfully investigate moving toward balance through a series of poses that challenge our orientation to gravity. When we are able to be vulnerable , and lean in, versus resist and pull away our capacity to balance on the "tight rope" of life becomes a welcome adventure. I look forward to moving toward balance together tomorrow morning on ZOOM, Wednesday April 7th 9:30am EST you can register at www.jodieruftyyoga.com #yoga #yogaonline #yogaonzoom #balance

Taking time to pause, to reflect,to hold space for ourselves and another is one of the most powerful and precious gifts we can offer. Learning to dance and swim through the beauty and complexity of what it is to be human requires us to continuously practice forgiveness and non-judgement. When we practice holding the postures in our asana practice, it enables us to create a container of energy in which we can bear witness to all that arises within our experience at that mome...nt. It sets the stage for our ability to be still and listen. And it is from that place of stillness that we have a greater capacity to see what’s in front of us to take whatever step is necessary. We begin to respond to our situations rather than react. Join me tomorrow , Friday April 2nd at 9:30am EST on ZOOM as we play with slowing down through the exploration of longer holds in the postures, to create greater strength in the body and space in the mind . Class is $15 you can register at www.jodieruftyyoga.com #yogaonline #pauseandreflect #yogaonzoom #yoga

YOGA ON ZOOM , TODAY, Wednesday March 31st 9:30am EST. Come explore the power and ease of back bending. Back Bending an help us open to the deep wisdom and compassion of the heart and teach us that vulnerability is a strength not a weakness. Roshi Joan Halifax says it beautifully "soft from , strong back". May we all learn to walk through life with a "soft front' and "strong back", the courage and strength it takes to be compassionate toward our own suffering and that of others. Class is $15. register at www.jodieruftyyoga.com #yoga #bacbends #yogaonline #yogaonzoom #roshijoanhalifax

"We cannot "do" Yoga, because Yoga is our natural state of being. What we can do, are certain exercises, that help reveal to us where we are resisting that natural state" - Sharon Gannon In todays world, where stress is imminent all around us, we need yoga and meditation to help us navigate this stress and the struggles it brings to our lives. Stress, can cumulatively over time, cause the body to break down and disease to slowly settle in . J During this uncertain, unpredicta...ble and difficult time in our world we need to have tools in dealing with day to day stress. No one escapes stress whether conscious or unconscious. All of us have endured stress, whether its emotional/mental, physical, spiritual or environmental. Particularly when we live in large cities like NYC, our systems become overloaded with many different types of stress. However even if you don't live in a big city you still experience stress. There is a certain amount of physical stress the body is designed to handle but we ARE NOT designed to handle mental/emotional stress over an accumulated period of time. Unless we make a conscious effort to slow down , relax, meditate or simply breath deeply for 5-10 minutes, eventually our bodies will begin to break down and we become sick. Below is a restorative pose I practice often in times of stress. When in this position be sure to do the following to initiate a response to your parasympathetic nervous system: 1) Hold in your mind the intention to Let go . 2) Focus on something repetitive (this can be your breath or a mantra Research has shown that when we intentionally set out to "let go" ad focus on a repetitive activity the parasympathetic nervous system begins to kick in and have a deep impact on the vitality of our entire system. Even if you don't "feel relaxed" it is taking place simply from slowing down and the power of intention !!!! Try this pose, "Vipariti Karani" for 5 minutes each day, or especially during a stressful period. Its also good for reducing inflammation and increasing blood flow to the pelvic area and upper extremities which is important since we are always upright most of the day. Join me for a 7 day YOGA RETREAT at Rios Tropicales deep within the rainforest of Costa Rica and rediscover your own inner sanctuary of peace. Nature provides us with all the tools we need to detox and destress .Nature contains within it everything necessary for us to recharge, reclaim and reconnect to our own natural state, harmony and well being. Nature gives us permission to slow down and to take a deep breath. Nurture yourself with yoga each day, freshly cooked healthy meals, hiking, or simply relaxing in mother natures beautiful embrace. =Link in comments= Picture credits from Adelina YWTT200 07/17

Heart of Yoga by Desikachar "Remember that yoga is a practice of observing yourself without judgment. However beautifully we carry out an asana, however flexible our body may be, if we do not achieve the integration of body, breath, and mind we can hardly claim that what we are doing is yoga. What is yoga after all?... It is something that we experience deep inside, deep within our being. Yoga is not an external experience. In yoga we try in every action to be as attentive as possible to everything we do. Yoga is different from dance or theatre. In yoga we are not creating something for others to look at. As we perform the various asana’s we observe what we are doing and how we are doing it. We do it only for ourselves. We are both observer and what is observed at the same time. If we do not pay attention to ourselves in our practice then we cannot call it yoga. -Krishnamacharya
