Next up in our delve into historical Black photographers is Florestine Perrault Collins (1895-1988), a photographer based in New Orleans. She began photographing at the young age of 14, and established herself as one of the first professional African-American female photographers, having only been one of 101 black female photographers recorded on the 1920 U.S. census. Collins used her ability to pass as white to assist white photographers and learn new skills, which helped her eventually start her own business. She defied both racial and gender expectations, and focused her craft on women and children, challenging views on black femininity and empowering her subjects. This Black History Month, JHP has been highlighting historical and modern Black photographers who you may not have learned about in your history lessons. These photographers are essential to photographic history and we will learn a little bit about them this month! First up is Augustus Washington (1820-1875), one of the only African-American daguerreotypists whose career was documented. Washington was born to formerly enslaved parents in Trenton, NJ, and fought to get an educ...ation despite his underprivileged background. He attended Dartmouth College for a year, where he learned how to make photographs. He eventually opened his own photography studio, and was known as one of the most successful and talented daguerreotypists in the area. He photographed well-known figures such as poets, political leaders, and radical abolitionists, and utilized creative lighting techniques to capture his subjects. He and his family eventually relocated to Liberia to find freedom that he could not experience in the U.S. Sources: betterphotography.in, connecticuthistory.org

Magnum photographer Leonard Freed captures civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. being greeted by supporters after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, 1964. We honor MLK Jr. on this day for his critical role in the rigorous fight against systemic racism that continues to this day.

We have two new online galleries of the work of teens and preteens from our Winter/Spring 201920 programs at Transfiguration Middle School in Chinatown and New Design Middle School in Harlem! Check them out at ww.jhproject.org/student-work We introduced these students to the basics of photography and visual storytelling through free after-school programming in partnership with Grand Street Settlement (Transfiguration) and YWCA-NYC (New Design). Collaboration with schools and organizations like these are how we continue to serve communities all over New York City.

5 things we’re grateful for: Our program participants. Photographs by people from underrepresented communities enrich our lives with their creativity and perspective. Our teaching artists. These talented folks bring inspiration, imagination, energy, and empathy into the classroom.... Our community partners. A wealth of social service providers, schools, and groups offer our programs to those they serve. Our institutional funders. Grants from government and private foundations cover much of the cost of teaching and showing photography. You! Our wonderful donors, volunteers, advisors, cheerleaders, word-spreaders, and other supporters make our work possible. Happy Thanksgiving to all! #Gratitude #Thanksgiving #GivingTuesday Photo credit: Firdavs A.
