The trailblazing Rev. Howard Moody, who helped turn Judson Memorial Church - New York City into an icon of the arts and social justice, would have turned 100 today. We look back at his incredible life and legacy:
[Judson] is a place where the stained glass walls do not divide and separate us from the world but it is here that we bring our world in its brokenness, its anguish and injustice to be remembered, and prayed for, and hoped for...[so that] righteousness will roll down like rivers of water, and justice like a mighty stream. -Rev. Howard Moody #HappyBirthdayRevHowardMoody #JudsonMemorialChurch #GreenwichVillage #NYC #EmbodyingSanctuary
Today Rev. Howard Moody would have turned 100! The 35 years of his ministry at Judson, as echoed by our archivist Abigail Hastings, "was a litany of all manner of good trouble Howard and the church got into, inside these walls and out in the world. Join Rev. Jacqui Lewis, Ph.D. & Rev. Mihee Kim-Kort to talk about the history of Anti-Asian violence, how it's manifesting now, and what we all can do to end it.
NOW: VICTORY! Excluded workers who have been on hunger strike for 23 days will break their fast today, following news of an impending vote on a budget bill that will contain billions in relief for workers who have been without a cent of financial support for the past year.
This Sunday Valerie and Donna will set the table for a rare Agape Easter Service. Rev. Valerie will explore the theological basis for our arrangement, and Rev. Donna will offer some domestic (not domesticated) thinking about Easter and its multiple meanings. Sounds fancy, but we'll use the same fork for our salad and meal. We'll miss Rev. Micah who is currently on hiatus. Do bring some bread and wine, and maybe a candle to your home table. Dress it up! Judson supports the we...aring of Easter Bonnets to online services, and frankly, year round if the spirit moves. Just want to give you all a glimpse of the deliciousness that Judson Memorial Church - New York City member Keen Stassen Berger dropped at Judson today. These l...ovingly-and-individually-wrapped beauties have been feeding the protesters who marched to #ProtectTheResults today and who now continue to raise their voices in Washington Square tonight. Thank you, Keen, for inspiring our collective breath and baking for us, and Thank you, Judson, for always being a #ProtesterSanctuary. In steadfast solidarity and radical hope, Micah
If you will be marching, protesting, or vigiling near Washington Square today, we will be open for #ProtesterSanctuary at 239 Thompson Street to provide restrooms, sanitizer, masks, water, snacks, and safe space from 6pm to 9pm. Thank you for all you all do to keep radical hope alive! Don't ever let Empire steal your radically hopeful breath.
Even with uncertainty filling these days leading up to the Presidential Election, our collective moral call is clear: This country is in need of radical, resilient love and, as Antoine de Saint Exupéry said in the Little Prince, Love is not just looking at each other, it’s looking in the same direction. No matter the election results, on November 4th at 2pm, communities of faith and hope will gather for The Circle Up, a soulful, multifaith moment to look back together, look inward together, and look forward together. All are welcome to hold space and to be held in community as we ground ourselves in breath, prayer, and song, preparing to become who we can and must be.
Join us at Judson, today at 2pm online or in-person You can read more about the ritual and register here: https://labshul.org/event/the-circle-up/ Even with uncertainty filling these days leading up to the Presidential Election, our collective moral call is clear: This country is in need of radical, resilient love and, as Antoine de Saint Exupery said in the Little Prince, Love is not just looking at each other, it’s looking in the same direction.... An Election Day prayer by Rev. Donna Schaper!
Vote with hope. It’s so much more empowering than despair!
At this Sunday's 11am service, as we prepare for whatever this week has in store, Micah will facilitate the addition of a final element to our growing congregational toolkit for collective transformation. We’ve been adding elements for the past few weeks, building the connections between Adaptability, Persistence, Positive Obsession, Hindsight, Foresight, Insight, and Inner-Animality (or Humility), and this week, we’ll add the element that gives sustenance to them all: Collec...tive Breath. We’ll read through some ancient words from Paul the Apostle as he reminds us of our spiritual gifts and we’ll enjoy beautiful music from Michelle Y. Thompson, Tony Perry, and, of course, Henco! We’ll also get to virtually sit around our Agape Table, so if you’d like to partake in communion, make sure you grab a little something to eat and drink, no matter what it is. All beings, all spiritual gifts, and all elements are welcome. (And remember: We’re falling back one hour this Sunday morning, before we surge forward together this next week!)
