JASC member highlight: Adena aka ‘Dee’ We don’t like to show off too frequently, but it would be a shame to not boast about Dee and the flies she’s been tying while in quarantine! Dee took up fly tying about a year ago and has been at the vise non-stop during COVID. We are so impressed by how her precision, technique, and skill have grown over the past couple of months, and we hope that these pictures inspire you to get behind the vise and give tying a shot! The Juliana’s got together to enjoy the peak fall foliage colors at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation this past Saturday! A morning of birding was followed up with a 5.5 mile hike through the park. The woods were vibrant with fall colors, and packed with busy birds preparing forwinter. A year ago today my dearest friend Linda Hotchkiss passed away while we were in Ireland. Linda was the most generous person I've known. She was a life guard and... a volunteer EMT who delivered many babies into the world. She worked with with Habitat for Humanities, Casting for Recovery, and raised puppies for Canines for Companions. She was the president of our women's fly fishing club for several years and taught at our annual school. She ran the sailing program at her local yacht club and taught kids how to sail. She was in line to become Commodore at that same club. When we tied flies at shows around the world, she was always teaching and giving, particularly to children. And, she gave an organ to a beloved family member. Linda loved fly fishing, sailing, golf, archery, shooting, baseball and the Mets, watching soccer and curling, crossword puzzles, Mumford and Sons, Zydeco, long walks in the woods and English country side, a good pub, seafood chowder, good local food, traditional Irish music, gin and tonic, fizzy water, cider, ice cream, meeting new people, dogs, kids, dramas and romances, mysteries, reading, adventures, New Orleans, her family, Aileen and her kids, Jane Austin and Pride and Prejudice, Sloe gin, Tullamore Dew, waterfalls, Vegas, house tours (especially if haunted), gooey English desserts, helping me cook, giving me a hard time, and trying to get me to interact more with kids. She hated tiny live stalk (mice). She was my best friend, travel companion, business partner, and always knew when I was in need of encouragement and support, and when I needed to be knocked down a peg or two. Before joining my company, she was a director at ISO where she worked for over 20 years, making friends and mentoring younger workers. She was always a good and savvy business partner and together, we filled our client appreciation boxes with goodies from our travels. When we traveled together, she was my memory of where we went, what we ate, who we met, and where we fished. We traveled to Iceland, Norway, Holland, England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, and various cities in the US. We always visited a cathedral or church where ever we were so she could light a candle for her mother. I talked to Linda nearly every day and still miss her terribly but try to do good things and help others more, in her memory. Lately, I find myself giving more and when I think on the reason, it always comes back to Linda. I loved her more than I realized and she enriched and influenced my life in ways that will stay with me. I only hope I can pass some of it along. If you can, do a good deed and raise a glass today in celebration of Linda's accomplishments, generosity, and life.
