My favorite thing about this shot is the light bulbs I found in a @cvspharmacy the night before. Learning to shop for props that photograph well is one of the hardest things I have had to learn how to do. Props can’t be too big or too small. They can’t be distracting. They should go with the story. They can’t be out of budget. So many things to think about when you are in a store or looking on line. ... A lot of what I did for these food shots was sorting the product. Especially with a product like a nut mix and granola you just must. It needs to be an accurate representation of what comes in the bag but it also has to be a quick read. ... If you can’t recognize that it is a pecan at first glance your brain will question it. Extra care goes into shots for packaging because it’s a static image. It sits on a shelf and consumers will compare it to other packages. If the packaging design is too busy the consumer will not be able to process all the information and subconsciously will make the decision not to buy it. Simple to the point with three or fewer elements is the goal. The image of the product should be all of these things. Simple. To the point. Brick to forehead. . Sorry to say that sometimes photos lie. Well more so, things aren’t always what they seem. For this shot I wanted it to appear as if there was a Christmas tree in the background but I didn’t have a tree. However, I did have some branches and some floral foam. I was able to rig it so the branches just popped in enough from the right side so that it looked like the bottom of a Christmas tree.... The tree appears bigger in the photo for 2 reasons. I used a low camera angle and a long lens. A low camera angle gives a little bit of a forced perspective that something is bigger than it is.
