This spring we have begun the project of upgrading our deer fence. For many years we have relied on a six foot high stranded wire fence. After the purchase of some adjacent property we decided it was time to bump the fence out to encompass that as well. We figured this was as good a time as any to put up a taller more secure fence to protect our valuable fruit. Last week we counted 82 deer in the field to the south. They won’t be happy to have fewer delicious grapes to eat but we will have more fruit to sell the wineries we work with so it’s well worth it. We plan to recycle the old posts and wire for use in our new Lemberger planting next spring. Checking drain tile outlets is a nice way to spend time on beautiful spring days like today. Tile drainage in vineyards is one of the most important pre-plant investments you can make in a vineyard. In the spring when the soils are saturated from snow melt and rains these lines help the soil get back to field capacity sooner. This allows us to be able to get in the vineyards quicker. It also helps keep the vines roots from being water logged. Grapes do not like wet feet.

Today we spent the early morning hours chopping brush in the vineyard. When we prune we cut off about 80-90% of the previous years growth. All of that wood has to go somewhere. Some vineyards remove it and burn it. We choose to mulch it with a brush chopper and return that organic matter to the soil. Today we worked on suckering our vines. This is important because it focuses all of the energy and resources toward the fruit bearing shoots.
