"People shouldn't be incarcerated because of these minor violations, especially as #COVID19 continues to ravage our communities and our prisons and jails." - Katal member Gabriela Vazquez on why she is fighting for #LessIsMoreNY.

Only 6% of NYC corrections staff took mandated trainings in suicide prevention & only 17% were trained for fire safety. This leaves people at Rikers & other jails with no support during a mental health crisis, or even a fire - New York Daily News. NYC must #CLOSErikers.

A new video explains why this is a big waste and how #LessIsMoreNY will reform parole to help support people. Spectrum News NY1, Nick Reisman, Morejustnyc, Unchained, A Little Piece of Light, Inc. Katal member Michael spent a year incarcerated for a technical parole violation - an experience that uprooted his life, made his path toward the successful completion of parole much harder, and disrupted his relationship with his children. #LessIsMoreNY With NY incarcerating more people for minor technical violations of parole than any other state in the country, people like Michael, NY must reform parole & pass #LessIsMoreNY this year. Good that Governor Ned Lamont's plan to reopen CJTS to incarcerate migrant children failed. Instead, he should be focus on ending mass incarceration in CT: CUT correctional populations, SHUT more prisons, and INVEST in communities harmed by mass criminalization. #CutShutINVEST.
Our member Robin Lawrence speaks to why parole in NY must be reformed to limit the incarceration of people for minor technical parole violations: 'People on parole have this dark cloud looming over them because they are constantly worrying about every action.' #LessIsMoreNY
Over 20% of the women incarcerated at Bedford Hills prison tested positive for #COVID19 on 4/16 - a 23% rise from the start of Apr. And so far, only 10% of the incarcerated women at Bedford Hills are fully vaccinated. With #COVID19 cases rising, Governor Andrew Cuomo must #FreeThemNowNY.
#COVID19 spread like wildfire through NY prisons, & continues to do so in facilities across the state w/ vaccinations for incarcerated people lagging. John J Lennon tells what it has been like inside Sing Sing prison through the pandemic. #FreeThemNowNY

Join us for our next #LessIsMoreNY Campaign Update Call, this Wednesday, April 21, 2:30pm - 3:30pm. RSVP: https://us02web.zoom.us//tZwrd--qpjsiHtdzpWS0OgXnBlfbXIpv1
During his briefing yesterday, Governor Ned Lamont announced that the CT Juvenile Training School (CJTS), closed in 2018 after years of advocacy from community groups, will not be re-opened 'right now' to detain young people emigrating to the US. While this is a short term win, it underscores why we need to organize so that CJTS is never reopened. Governor Lamont's idea to reopen jails/prisons is immoral & wrong and he must focus on decarceration + investments in impacted communities. #CutShutINVEST

While the population of people incarcerated in CT went down because of #COVID19, racial disparities in CT prisons grew worse -- Governor Ned Lamont must take this data as evidence to further CUT correctional populations, SHUT jails & prisons, + INVEST in CT communities. #CutShutINVEST
The shooting of Daunte Wright, during the trial seeking justice for George Floyd & a day after Caron Nazario was pepper sprayed, shows us why we must stand together to dismantle white supremacy in all its forms. #BlackLivesMatter In this interview, Toussaint Morrison, a community organizer in Minnesota, speaks on what it takes to eradicate anti-Blackness & white supremacy in law enforcement, & the deeply embedded racism in the US. As he says, "it’s up to the people."
