The ultimate compliment is when your clients from years past call again to take a well-loved home to the next stage, and the next level. Onward and upward, we say. This client always has the right mindset- families change, needs change, houses respond. We take the best of the past and with fresh eyes, redefine what the future can look like. This nursery is just one of many rooms getting a bit more than just a refresh and we’re excited for this family and a new chapter.

What if your Monday morning was different? What if it felt...better, optimal, nourishing? How would your morning, your day, your week, your self change? Haven’t we all come back from a vacation to say I wish I could bring the experience of x home? X is anything- sunrise yoga, an immaculate room, a sleek shower, coffee in bed, a meditation zone, a tricked out gym, a beautiful garden table for breakfast... I wish we let ourselves really bring those expe...riences home. There’s no reason we can’t except that time, expectations and well, your usual Monday AM gets in the way. So if someone asked you to reach back into those experiences and memories, and was there to bring those elements to life, wouldn’t your Monday morning finally feel different, wouldn’t it feel... great? That’s the sort of thinking we bring to our projects- we’re in for the journey, are you? : @casacookhotels (where I’d prefer to be this Monday AM) See more

Monday- back at it. Working from home is not ideal for my industry- the very real need of a sample library and working collaboratively with materials hands-on simply requires an actual office. Some things are here to stay though- flexibility and less time commuting is an absolute plus that I’m unwilling to give up. For 2020, we aimed to find upsides; we did and we’re not looking back. For 2021, we’re moving the goalpost to find ways to make this whole cur...rent set up work advantageously, no matter the current pandemic status. We’re up for entirely new ways of embracing team, vendor and client communications and are all ears on what others have found to be game-changers, in terms of ways to work, technology helpers, process changes that are better for all. Figured out something genius and feel like sharing? DM me or share here, and I’m happy to share back. Last year was about silver linings, this year I’m down for a striking gold. See more

Wednesday vibes- ready to get to 5pm, find a recipe and focus on that for an hour or two to help clear my head. This would be a great spot for exactly that. Our Sagaponack breakfast nook with window seats and an enviable cookbook library is a good example of us of taking a space from very nice to...oh so much better. Just a little pop of color (and some new chairs. rug and fabrics) transformed an otherwise lovely and sentimental, but tired, dining room into a space my client could be excited about again. Our philosophy: Change can sometimes happen in just one or two key moves, and when expertly done, that’s just as valid as a whole makeover.

Today I received lovely compliments about our #bha showhouse lounge from 2017. Instantly I remembered opening night, a sweltering October eve, when so many came in to see the house. By the time they made it to our room, it was clear a sit down was warranted. Soaked in my dress, like everyone else, I got to meet so many supporters that evening simply because I invited them to take a seat, and the sofa was comfy, the chairs were fun and there were plenty of places to mingle nea...r two huge open windows that caught the lightest breeze. * Our hope for every project is that we land exactly where we did that eve- (less the issue of no A/C) with rooms that work and look their best when used, and loved, and made whole. Interiors look pretty, often beautiful, on IG and in magazines. But they feel great, and work great and downright inspire when we’ve gone through our process to design them well,. When our clients fill them up with conversation, play, work and relaxation- then they shine. See more

Some days, as if on cue, the next door opens... Light-filled entrance in our #Westchester country house project where we highlighted the double height, and with a handful of decisions struck the right tone of new-tradition and sophistication. Ralph Mackin Architects made our job easy breezy.

Up and at ‘em- one more day till the weekend! . . One of my favorite LR views from our Greenwich Georgian project on newsstands now. To me this view perfectly encapsulates the clients’ love of color, pattern and layers of detail. The rooms swallowed up color- they seemed to just keep giving us permission to layer more and more. Oh 2021, you are not going to let us rest are you? Here’s hoping that despite the chaos, the challenges, the peaks and valleys that get thrown our way, we each have a place we all can find respite and calm to center ourselves and find the core that leads us forward. From my house, to your house and all the way to the White House, I hope that when most needed, we find the harmony and beauty that can be achieved when respect for process is honored. What a day.

Kathleen Walsh Interiors, LLC 14.12.2020

2021: The year of the refresh, the next chapter, the pivot from the past- all of it. We’re lined up with bold new clients ready for us to work our magic and many forward-thinking, past clients are back for more. But, all good things change, myself included. And in 2021, we do not work the same way we did years ago, not do we design as we did years ago. Just as those past clients are up for even-more, we are too and new clients, yes, tell me what pics you love, just know we de...liver for you, and it’s not that pic. * For example, I designed this room 8/9 years ago and it’s still super pretty. But if you gave me this room now to design, the solution would be totally different. I certainly wouldn’t have settled for the print over the fireplace. The center pendant could have done a lot more work- lantern-wise it still is a fave but I would be taking a totally different approach. We could use a much more nuanced and sophisticated area rug. The wall color I’m fine with still- I just would compliment it with a tinted ceiling or more interesting color on the trim and paneling or a more thoughtful finish/technique. The furniture is all still valid- it’s a country home and this client appreciated beautifully made furnishings and we absolutely did not slouch here. Most importantly, what I insist upon now is the last layer of accessories, adding something that’s quirky, something that’s uber-cozy, inviting, something that makes you feel like you’re at a five-star resort, something that takes the comforting level to the forefront. Is this still a beautiful room- yes, it stands the rest of time. Can it get a refresh? Absolutely. * I am so honored and grateful to have clients that always return with new projects- just don’t ever think I’ll do the same thing twice. And new clients, I can’t wait to join in on your journey. I am very proud of all the work we’ve done, and can’t wait to see what we do next. See more

KWI 2021 Resolution: The art budgets on projects- no matter the level- cannot be cut, left to the end, or re-visited later. Can you possibly imagine this room looking as complete as it does without that crucial element? I certainly cannot. To all my lovely followers in the midst of designing your home or re-thinking your existing, keep this one line item in your budget and you’ll thank me later. #livingwithart

My firm embraces a clean line, an understated palette, a clarity of vision. But that doesn’t mean shunning beautiful antiques, an opulent detail, or rich color. To me it all works beautifully together, in proportion. What better way to appreciate the present, than by honoring the past, and letting them each live and have a conversation in the same room? After all, It’s a rather dull party when everyone thinks the same, dresses the same and has referenced the same, IMHO. We’re looking to 2021 projects and are rather excited by the fun mix on tap- want to join in? We’re booking late spring starts and would love to chat! E-design with lots of zooms and presentations by package avail for a select few. or DM us here.

Kathleen Walsh Interiors, LLC 10.10.2020

Brrr, feeling like winter outside , but so cozy in here. Loved designing the wall of custom cabinetry and creating a wet bar and window seat nook by the pool table. Custom comfort and furnishings balanced the proportions of this room to feel just as comfortable for 12 as it does for 4. In summer, french doors step out to an adjacent screened porch and in winter, a fire brings focus to the majestic stone fireplace. And the ceiling’s antique beams and wood- swoon! Needless to say, it’s one of my fave rooms and I love revisiting it every time the weather turns colder. Architect: @ralphmackinarchitects : @johnneeebee

Kathleen Walsh Interiors, LLC 07.08.2020

Seeking out a little calm and quiet today...yet the to-do list is super long and I still haven’t caught up on all my November client work. But that’s life. And this Thanksgiving, I am more than aware of how close we all are to it changing in a moment. So while we celebrate, complain, stress, revel and yes, find some calm too, lets please be most mindful that what we do for others, and ourselves, matters. Covid is more than a flu for far too many. I’m speaking up aga...in because 2 more friends are dealing with this firsthand. One has it, along with a lung condition that really complicates matters. She was uber careful. Others around her were not. My other friend has a death in the family to contend with, an unnecessary one. Prepping for a #holidayathome and I will really really miss seeing my in-laws, especially my 94 year old mother-in-law. But, in the spirit of silverlinings, I kinda can’t wait to set our own table and cook in my own kitchen during a holiday for once! Still need to figure out how really to fill the day but whatever we do, it won’t be the same as usual, and that’s okay. To be fortunate enough to be able to do this comfortably, and be with the ones who mean the most to me in the world is something for which I’m so grateful. If 2020 has done nothing else, we’ve been reminded of what’s most important. As we dive into the season, I hope to keep that thought foremost in mind. #tistheseason

Quiet corners tend to be a specialty at our firm. If we can deliver calm, we’ve done our job well for so many of our busy clients. These days, we’re finding extra #wfh spaces, we’re adding places for families to gather without screens, we’re redesigning kitchens and baths- the hardest working rooms of the house and yes, outdoor spaces are getting what it takes to extend their seasons. But for everyone, we’re also delivering calm, because it’s the most needed feeling of all right now. Need room to breathe? Let’s talk.

I’ve been playing musical chairs between my cozy home desk, my dining table, an outdoor porch and most often, my kitchen counter as I work from home during Covid. I am missing my huge work table, in person check-ins with staff and samples at the ready in my office. And some days, that alone can send me grumbling. BUT- I am fortunate in so many obvious ways- most notably in that I’m alive. We’ve not let down our guard, why? Because me and my family and co-workers are part of... bigger communities that also need to stay safe. You do your part, we do ours. And then you see our President. Infected with Covid, taking off a mask while walking into the White House, greeted by masked staff stuck there no matter what they may think. Saying of Covid ...not to let it dominate your life. What more has dominated our lives for the last 7 months??? How he flaunts disregard for others’ lives is mind-blowing to me. Vote him out. Pretty sure we’re all going to be seeking moments and places of calm this season for far too many reasons. Like many of you, I just watched 90 minutest of the lowest of low-ball debate strategies. What lesson was taught to any middle or high-schooler, watching to learn and observe? What was the impression sent to new citizens and young adults looking to participate in their first election? What information was clarified for undecided voters? That was such an embarrassment to ...our entire nation. This is not a question of party- that was one immature bully, desperate to divert discussions, using the only tactic he could. My wish is that voters use the skills taught by childhood teachers and librarians- seek sources of information that are as independent as can be found, find the headspace and quiet needed to decide where to place one’s valued votes, and take into consideration the tone our country needs for the next 4 years. #vote2020 #voteearly #voterregistration See more

My Saturday #wanderlust is in full swing, and today I’m longing to go back to Ireland where the landscape is lush, people have good humor and ...where my skin miraculously never looked and felt better, maybe an unexpected bonus from all that moisture in the air? But more importantly, I could certainly do for a few walks in the mist, spotting deer in the distance, wandering into old churches and long pub lunches. It’s been 4+ generations since most of my Irish forebears made the hopeful trip across the Atlantic, but my heartstrings still tug for this magical island where people welcome you with a smile, and where the landscape and historical structures send you to every corner of the place, enchanting visitors every step of the way. I cannot wait to travel again... (Note to self: bring tick repellent).

Loving our newest install, delivered just in time for back to school zooms,. We renovated a former hardly-used greenhouse/winter run-around space into a multi-zone teen classroom/lounge. We planned for active desk time, secondary project/homework space, and lounge/reading space for 3 middle and high-schoolers. An adjacent lawn and indoor gym space works for taking those zoomed gym classes, away from siblings and their snarky comments (yay for sibs). Updated windows, sun shade...s, a beverage station, privacy screens and tons of storage are just a few perks. For work away from each other, each child still has their desk in their room or the kitchen table, but this spot lets parents keep an eye on kids during the day easily, and separates sleep and school zones- super important for this age-group. And did I mention I love the colors? #backtoschool #kidsdesk #interiordesigninspiration See more

Happy Fall-ish! What's New What's Next has always been one of my favorite events to look forward to, and this year, while decidedly different, is going to be so much fun. For the 12th Annual #WNWN, the @NYDC has pivoted to an entire month of insights, content, and top product picks, and I'm delighted to be a part of the Inaugural 2020 WNWN Ambassador program! Link-in-bio to meet all the ambassadors and see what we have to say about What’s Next in design.

I could so use this scene right now. Begging for a return trip to @calcotmanor in the #cotswolds whenever we can travel again. We, the kids, all of us loved the whole resort. PS- I’m stealing that freestanding bathtub surround- genius #ustime #metime #familyvacation #calgontakemeaway

Last summer, in Capri, I wandered into @ecocapri and the world of artist #LetiziaCerio and am forever smitten. The shop features fashion, home wares, accessories and a love for Capri that is expressed in a way that is solely hers. The family is legendary, the goodies are so much fun, but sophisticated at the same time. When it seems you can get anything, anywhere, I love that to really be charmed you need to go and visit. I was trying not to be wistful about summer’s end, but seeing these pics- yup, I am. * * #onlyincapri #capri #illustration #homewares #caftanstyle

This chandelier by @cartwirghtny is going to beautifully grace a client’s dining room. But the nicest part of ordering this was meeting the owner in person when she picked up glass samples from me, from my house, which just happened to be convenient for us both. We wound up hanging out on the sidewalk, swapping stories about everything from glass to kids to entrepreneurship and on and on. That wouldn’t usually have happened- we’d normally be our busy selves, messengering things to and fro. I mentioned #silverlinings the other day - this was definitely one and I’m keeping an eye out for more- they’re there

Promising myself a bit more time away from my desk to appreciate these last weeks of summer. We’re usually off adventuring at the end of August so it’s just weird to be home and in full work mode. It’s throwing me. I’m wistful about our Canadian Rockies trip that is postponed. I want to be in a red canoe on a emerald lake. I wanted to be hiking on Vancouver Island and exploring pretty Victoria. But, time to be an adult and move on. Instead we’re installing a super fast and fun project, we’ll celebrate my daughters birthday at home for once, and in the best news, my babysitter agreed she’s comfortable coming by a couple nights before school starts so we can have a date night. What a weird year, but I’m determined to find the silver linings. Hope you all do too. Happy #Sunday!

Custom anything- to me that’s possibly the best perk of hiring a designer. Why settle when you can just get what’s best? Case in point: Custom-colored breakfast room chairs in family-friendly materials from @maison_drucker.

Color is such a dynamic tool. Here that blue is a bright, refreshing, fun pop. Elsewhere, it could be used as a neutral in a sea of patterned fabrics. Figuring out how to ignite each client’s color palette is one of our most favorite puzzles to figure out. Luckily it’s not random, we actually have relied on an exercise done early in each project to figure it out. Curious? Give us a .

So in love with all the new pieces from @dmitriyco this year. I ask my clients to make investments in beautifully made upholstery that they will use for years and decades to come. But that doesn’t mean we pick something that’s plain or a neutral solution. Instead, we look for distinct pieces that you will not bore you in a matter of months. Case in point: That curved arm is not a fad, the double foot will charm for decades, and the craftsmanship is hand made and fantastic- I’m sold.

Swoon! File this alabaster sconce by @alliedmaker under #thingsilove And as a bonus, it’s going into a special project for my clients who *totally get* our direction of thoughtful modern designs for their antique, 1760’s house. When you catch me smiling about my job, this is just one of the reasons why.

So happy for my truly talented friend Molly Glasgow who, among her many hats, is an artist, an awesome mom and is part of the duo behind @thegreybarnchilmark. I just got my copy of The New Farm and her beautiful photography graces it’s pages. We’ve known each other since our @prattinstitute days and she still knows how to walk in the room and drop the mic without saying a word- her art does all the talking, and it speaks volumes. Sincerest congrats my friend

Psst: not every kitchen makeover requires new cabinetry. In fact, we’ll constructed, but dated cherry cabinets and green marble countertops can morph into this pretty kitchen with a solid painter at the ready, new counters and new backsplash tiles. Bonus points for swapping out tired lighting for something custom like these from @urbanelectricco. #kitchenrenovation #kitchenmakeover

Today we kick off a new project with our first step: Discovery Day. Curious? After 16+ years on my own and 10+ years prior working for firms, I can tell you our process works well for us and our clients. That’s not to say we don’t test things- and this weird year has given us the chance to try some new ideas, some we adopted, others were tossed. But our core process was unshaken. We educate, we ask, we listen, we explore. It’s fun. Read all about it on our website. #linkinbio

It is not lost on me that I get the privilege to work daily with skilled, lovely craftspeople and artists that inspire. These whimsical ceramic blossoms by #bradleysabin, available for commission through @voltzckarkegallery, made for the prettiest addition in a client’s living room. That I got to be there for the installation was such fun. Sure I have my share of frustrating moments but it’s those days that I choose to remember most.

Wishing my Monday felt just.like.this. Off to the races and so grateful for the clients and work we have. Make it a great week everyone!

Remember travel? And finding new things to love? And seeing things anew? Back in January I fell a little head-over-heels for everything in the window @fabrice.paris while there for trade shows. I intended a little purchase to be my last stop but then the strikers closed off the bridges and I needed to hustle fast to get in a taxi that just barely got me to the airport in time. We *will not* speak about how much in VAT refund I did not get to claim then, but, more importantly..., that window didn’t leave my brain. * Google maps let me re-find the shop since I can’t recall names of anything. I felt guilty about buying things like jewelry in a pandemic, and everything closed anyway. But, come my June birthday, voila! A few baubles to delight me arrived and reminded me of why I sincerely hope a vaccine happens sooner than later so we can go explore all that’s lovely and unique in the world, again, and open up our worlds. I just hope all the small businesses are still there to explore when we get to that point. In the meantime, I’ll continue to discover anew online, and when I can, will support small business in hopes they make it through to my next visit. See more

Where do we find inspiration? Oftentimes right here in IG! Here, I needed art that was bold, but light, perhaps a bit dreamy, definitely abstract. Then @r.sternfineart posted images of her new work that struck a chord. A studio visit to borrow works, a client willing to pop home for 15 minutes in the middle of her work day, and a trip to @jpocker framers bought these to fruition. And now Rebecca is a fave artist I follow- she got married a little bit ago and just had the most... adorable baby boy. I love meeting new sources and while IG connects me to a huge world of designers, craftspeople and artists that make my sourcing better and more interesting, the most fun is still meeting everyone in person, or getting on the phone and having a conversation. Thats when connections are really made and the world seems a little smaller. These days, I miss meeting and greeting, but I do find myself using an actual more often. I am so grateful for the fun, fruitful conversations had with design world friends these days. And keep posting- even if you’re sick of it, somewhere there’s someone like me, just looking for your perfect creative gem See more
