Some of my work includes dissolving arguments and being an impartial arbiter between other parties like salvage yards that may sell a unit and it comes back "No... good" or didn't beat the warranty period. The salvage yards know I call 'em straight up as I see them and if they are liable I have no trouble telling them. I also believe they appreciate that straight answer. Well this Dodge plow truck trans was shipped to the Canada border and run for 3 months before it "failed". The whole back half of the transmission, overdrive housing, planetary, Torrington bearing, ring gear, sprag assembly is gun metal blue from overheat but the overdrive clutch itself is not burned up. WHERE DID THE HEAT COME FROM ? The answer is simple. The cooling system ! Something in the system is plugged. Just because you can blow 150 psi of shop air through a cooler does NOT mean any more than 1 single core in the cooler is clear. 90% of a cooler (especially Dodge) can be plugged and it will still blow through ! This one is on the installation and cooling system and not on the salvage yard. See more

So you want to own a Transmission repair shop ? Here's an example of how easy it is to get bit in the @sz by something that is essentially not your fault. Ford... Superduty 5R110W pump and torque converter failure on a unit that I built. Now I know there is a electrical ground issue common with these units so I have Donnie install a battery cable on all these units when he installs them for me. However, this truck had a battery cable on the front of the engine that was no good, so our adding a redundant ground didn't fix the issue but only made sure that the ground from engine/trans to frame passed through from transmission to frame through the torque converter to the pump gears and THEN to the transmission case and on to the frame. The spinning pump gear became a spinning welding electrode and welded the gear to the pump. :( Only upon installing the transmission after repairing it, did I notice the main ground from engine to frame barely touching. Happy happy, joy joy See more

Explorer blues.... this is the one I showed you the pan on yesterday. The torrington bearing between the overdrive sun gear and planet carrier exploded----> los...t end play---> pulled the sun gear star drive out of the overdrive drum and then machined the castles right off the drum which are supposed to drive the star and sun gear. Bad joo-joo See more

35's and 4:88 gears, stick 5 spd He's broken teeth twice in 5,000 miles. Now he's going to try one I assembled to see if he can break this one. Again slightly t...oe-heavy pattern. Give it 200 miles or so for break-in because I did set it up a little tight on purpose to lessen shock. There you go, I can't set it up any better. See more

Chevrolet 6 speed pickup truck with Aisin/Toyota transmission which they all have. Now I already had these pistons out and carefully looked for cracks because I... know they crack, and COULD NOT SEE A CRACK. I put new seals on the pistons and installed clutches and then on an air check, heard the noise, disassembled again and that is where this video begins. So you want to be a transmission rebuilder ? Dead Flat. It has become apparent that Dodge/Ram 45RFE/545RFE and 68RFE Valve bodies warp over time as much as .008"- .017". Then the "worm-tracks" cast into th...e valve body halves begin to walk on the transfer plate between the upper and lower valve body halves and create cross-leaks and incorrect pressures on clutches, causing clutches fighting each other and ultimately, transmission failure. To ensure the valve bodies I build are "dead flat", I purchased a headstone at Grethen-Carhenger memorials, polished and flat to .0001" Then I used contact cement and countertop laminate to secure a cloth/resin sheet of sandpaper, making a perfectly flat sanding surface. It may be hard to see in the pics but it is obvious where the low spots are and easy sanding makes them dead flat again. The result is a better shifting, longer lasting transmission. See more

This is happening very consistently. GM 6 speed transmission 2007- 2018, torque converter fails, spits kevlar parts into the pump which destroys the pump, lowe...rs pressure, burns clutches.....etc. But more and more I'm also seeing [this] the TEHCM Module pressure switches blowing out the membrane centers, failing and compounding the failures. This one is from 6L90E FedEx cutaway only 3 years old. It is exactly the same as Chevy/GMC 2500 and 3500 trucks. Fortunately Sonnax Makes this kit to rebuild the hydraulic micro switches. It takes practice and a knaack but it saves replacing a $666 dollar TEHCM. and reprogramming it. See more

Allison 1000 .....Dropped off with circuit D failure and pressure switch E failure. Diagnose and replaced control wire for circuit D. Pressure switch code repea...ts but D solenoid circuit is now good. Manually test pressure switches-good. Rebuild valvebody and install Transgo steel spool valves- good. See more

Let me know if any of you thinks that this is unreasonable of me, this is also going on my business page...... So a month ago I did a transmission for a guy on ...a 2007 Chevrolet with a 5.3L engine. He asked me to check the rear main engine oil seal for a leak. *Give a shout out if you have ever seen a 5.3 rear main that did actually leak because I haven't and we pull a LOT more transmissions out than any service related shop* Anyway, when we pulled the transmission, the seal was dry, and the face of the flywheel was dry. There was however quite a bit of oil from the pan gasket and leaking down from above somewhere. When the transmission job was done I road tested as usual and let the truck run in front of my shop almost an hour with no visible oil leak. a week after that I got a call from the gentleman who said his repair shop (Autobody) told him again the rear main seal leaks. I called the shop, spoke with the owner who put the truck on the lift per my request, took the shield off below the starter and reported "The flywheel and the inside of the belhousing are dry like you said." (OK) So this morning I got a call from the owner again who says he went to another shop who also told him that the rear main oil seal is leaking. I reminded the owner of what the other shop found but the owner said "I don't know automotive. All I know is that the engine is leaking oil !" So I answered "I don't want any chance for error here or finger pointing. This is the solution. We set up a time when you can come to my shop and I will remove the transmission while you watch. I would even prefer that you bring the mechanic who is telling you that it leaks. If the rear main seal is leaking, I will replace it Free, parts and labor. If it is Not leaking then you owe me for R+I (8 hours labor) and whatever fluids are necessary." Customer "So you are saying I have to pay $750 to fix the oil leak !!??!!" Me " I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying that I will fix it for free (((IF))) it leaks but I'm not into working for free on things which have nothing to do with me and because of someone else' finger pointing."
