A New Sangha of Monks at Padma Samye Chokhor Ling Monastery in Sarnath, India! This year sixteen new monks arrived from Nepal, which was an extraordinary advent...ure for them to travel from the mountaintops of Nepal down to the planes of India. This month three additional monks arrived from Assam, and have already acclimated to the settings under the guidance of the director Lama Tsering Tashi. Together with the sponsorship from our Chiso Shop and PBC, Lars Cederholm and Anna Rochegova have been important pillars of strength with annual donations to cover the costs of the education and healthcare for our monks. In order to curb the rising costs of nutrition, we have planted a very expansive garden at the PBC Orgyen Samye Chokhor Ling Nunnery in Sarnath, which is easily within walking distance of the monastery. The monastery was renovated to include new bathrooms and a kitchen area. We’re also providing new clothing and three daily vegetarian meals to all of the monks, and five teachers offer five daily classes on the Dharma, Tibetan, English, Hindi, and mathematics. We’re on our way to creating an ideal environment for these young minds to flourish! If everything goes well, another addition ten-fifteen monks will soon arrive, bringing the total number of monks to over thirty! Without the Sangha community we can’t practice. Sangha is the source of inspiration in difficult ways, beautiful ways, hard ways, soft ways. The sangha is co...nstantly giving us lessons and reminders of our ego and negative emotions, as well as our goodness qualities of joy, compassion, and bodhichitta. Sangha is helping us. Sangha is training us all the time. Therefore to move to buddhahood, definitely we need sangha. Without the sangha, there is no growth, no support, no examples, and no help. How can we become warriors overcoming all our negative emotions with love, compassion, and wisdom by ourselves alone? One may ask, ‘Since we are Mahayana and Dzogchen practitioners, why should we investigate all of these different views?’ Longchenpa answers that although there... is some truth to that, you will better appreciate your own understanding and approach if you know different levels of approach and various kinds of ideas. Therefore, we are using this knowledge for the growth and exploration of a deeper meaning of nature. Longchenpa is not the only one to have said this. At many places in the teachings the Buddha said, You must study and contemplate not only the Buddhist teachings, but even the doctrines of non-Buddhists. Then by comparing them you can learn more and thus your realization and understanding will increase. Enlightened Activities As Guru Padmasambhava himself said, the purpose of attaining enlightenment is to benefit all beings. Benefitting beings is the activity o...f the buddhas. The source of this activity is the power of loving-kindness and compassion, along with the wisdom of nonduality. When buddhas act on behalf of beings, they do so primarily through the four activities of pacifying, increasing, magnetizing, and subjugating. By performing these activities individually or in combination, buddhas remove all the negativities and suffering of sentient beings and show them their own enlightened qualities. Sentient beings are heavily saturated and burdened by negative emotions, which are like blocks of ice. But when beings connect with the buddhas, those blocks of ice begin to melt quite easily. The activity of buddhas is therefore to awaken sentient beings to buddhahoodtheir innate nature by whatever means necessary. All the activities the buddhas perform for the sake of sentient beings are embodied in Guru Padmasambhava. Guru Padmasambhava’s activities are limitless, like the number of stars in the universe. He doesn’t just do one thing at a timehe can perform an inconceivable number of beneficial acts for the sake of an inconceivable number of beings in a single instant. When Guru Padmasambhava acts, there is no hesitation, no delay, no obstacle, and nothing missing. The movements of the ocean tides can be measured and relied on; yet Guru Padmasambhava’s activities are even more timely and accurate. Guru Padmasambhava performs all of the activities of all enlightened beings. We pray to that activity. We pray to Guru Padmasambhava." Mipham Rinpoche (1846-1912) was a great Nyingma scholar, meditation master, and author of the 20th century. Blessed by Manjushri, he became one of the greatest scholars of his time, and was a devoted student of Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo Rinpoche, and Patrul Rinpoche. Mipham Rinpoche had an enormous impact in re-awakening a deep reverence and interest in the Nyingma and Dzogchen teachings. Three hundred and twenty-two of his Dharma texts have survived. In addition to these, he composed more than thirty-five books on a range of subjects including medicine, poetry (particularly the Gesar epics), logic, cosmology, astrology and divination, alchemy, painting and sculpture, engineering, and both extensive and pithy commentaries on the Sutras and Tantras of Buddha Shakyamuni and Guru Padmasambhava. Ven. Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche brings these teachings vividly to life with practical, pithy advice that goes straight to the heart and inspires us all to use this precious opportunity for the great and lasting benefit of all beings.
