On Saturday, January 9, 2021, the KWD will be making emergency repairs to a valve located in Albany Ave., near the intersection of St. James Court. In the interest of public and worker safety, we will be detouring all traffic on Albany Ave. inbound from the City/Town line onto Tremper Avenue as shown on the map. Outbound traffic on Albany Ave from the area of Col. Chandler Drive to the City line will be directed around the work site as shown on the map. In advance, we thank you for your patience and cooperation and ask that you avoid that area if possible.

1905 Post Card of Cooper's Lake. At the time it was a small Catskill pond with about 250,000 gallons of water and not the 1.5 billion gallon reservoir that was built by the KWD over the intervening years. The handwritten caption on the card notes that this is "where Kingston gets her extra water supply" because at that time, most of the City's water came from our Sawkill Watershed and Cooper's lake was only used to augment the flow of the Sawkill Creek during the summer months. Today, water is piped from our Intake on the Mink Hollow Creek into Cooper Lake Reservoir and is stored there until needed. From Cooper it is piped through our treatment system and delivered to your tap for less than a penny a gallon!

As reported earlier this evening, the DOT contractor working on the Roundabout broke the water main and caused a catastrophic release of water which sent a plume of rusty water throughout uptown and midtown. Our crews are done flushing and we believe the system is back to normal. If you still have rusty water, please run your water for several minutes to rid your internal plumbing of the discolored water. If after flushing for several minutes, the turbidity persists, call 845-331-0205 and report the condition so that our crews can flush your neighborhood in the morning. Thank you for your patience!

Kingston Water Department 14.09.2020

The DOT's contractor at the Roundabout project damaged the water main, causing a brief, but catastrophic, release of water. The situation is under control and the contractor is making repairs. However, the break is likely to cause rusty and turbid water in large parts of midtown and uptown Kingston. KWD crews are out flushing the system and hope to have things back to normal as soon as possible.

Kingston Water Department 26.06.2020

Our crew is fixing a break on Lucas, near Dunneman. They have located the leak but one of the valves that would have limited the shut down to a couple of blocks, is not holding and it will be necessary to increase the area of the outage to make the repair. The outage should include Lucas Ave at Dunneman down to Forsyth Park and over to Edson. We apologize for the inconvenience. The outage should be brief. Thank you for your patience.

Kingston Water Department 15.06.2020

Commercial Customer Guidance May 26 2020 The New York State on PAUSE executive order issued by Governor Cuomo due to COVID-19 has resulted in many large commercial buildings, businesses, and government facilities with little to no occupancy for weeks. These include schools, offices, hotels, medical facilities, restaurants, and health clubs etc. This inactivity results in stagnant water that can allow chlorine to drop to undetectable levels. Chlorine is used in the Kingst...on Water Department’s water system to ensure that there is no regrowth of biofilms that could contain Legionella and other potentially harmful bacteria. Long periods of stagnation in building water systems with no chlorine residual can allow the growth of harmful bacteria, and can cause leaching of metals from pipes, leading to discolored water or elevated lead levels. Property owners are responsible for maintenance of their internal plumbing systems to ensure water quality does not degrade. If your building, or sections of it, have been unoccupied for an extended period, the City urges you to take action to ensure that water is safe to use when normal building use resumes. Prior to re-occupancy, consider developing a Water Quality Mitigation Plan for your building. Every building plumbing system is unique, so it will be important to consider the design of your plumbing system when developing a mitigation plan. There are several resources available to use to develop a plan. Please consider using the resources below to develop a plan to ensure your building’s water system is safe: USEPA Guidance: https://www.epa.gov//information-maintaining-or-restoring- CDC guidance: https://www.cdc.gov//2019-n/php/building-water-system.html Water Research Foundation’s Flushing Guidance: https://www.waterrf.org/sys/files/resource/2019-05/4572.pdf The Purdue University Center for Plumbing Safety rapid response study: https://engineering.purdue.edu///faq-building-water-safety The Environmental Science, Policy & Research Institute (ESPRI) roadmap for flushing contaminants from buildings: https://esprinstitute.org/coronavirus-building-flushing-gu/ The KWD will continue to do to keep you informed of any further developments concerning your water supply. Please do your best to keep yourself, your employees, and customers safe and healthy. Please call us at 845 331-0175 if you have questions. Sincerely, The Kingston Water Department

The Board of Water Commissioners and Mayor Steve Noble recognize the financial strain that many of our residents are under as a result of the Covid-19 Emergency. Therefore, they have waived the 10 percent penalty on all water and sewer bills for the period of April 7, 2020 through May 12, 2020. They will re-evaluate and consider a possible extension of the waiver at their next meeting on May 13th. The waiver is ONLY for the 10% penalty for the late payment of those bills t...hat are due during that period and does not impact the actual charges for water and sewer use. Those amounts cannot be waived. The Board of Water Commissioners and Mayor Noble hope that by waiving the penalties on water and sewer bills during this difficult time, it will assist those in our community that are struggling financially and need time to catch up when this crisis is over. This waiver does not apply to any bills that were due and payable prior to April 7, 2020. See more

Notice of Water Service Interruption in Vicinity of the 587 Roundabout Immediate Release Contact: Judith Hansen, Superintendent 845-331-0175 X1301... In anticipation of the work on the 587 Roundabout that is scheduled to begin on or about March 1, 2020, the Kingston Water Department will be doing work on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 to ensure that we have control of the water supply within the DOT work zone. Following the repair of the water main break on Linderman Avenue on January 8th and out of an abundance of caution, a Boil Water Advisory was placed on those customers impacted by the break. All samples have come back negative and the BOIL WATER ADVISORY has been lifed. We have launched a reverse 911 message to all impacted. However, if you do not have a landline and have not provide the KWD with a cell phone number, we will not be able to reach you using the system. Therefore, please email us at [email protected] with a cell phone or email contact and we will add you to our list for future advisories. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Kingston Water Department 26.01.2020

Update on Linderman Avenue main break. The repair is complete and the water is being turned back on. It will take some time for the pipes to refill and for everyone to get their water back. Once service is restored, we will begin flushing the mains through the hydrants to clear the system. Out of an abundance of caution, we are advising that anyone that was without water or had low pressure to please boil all water that is used for consumption. We will be taking samples throughout the area later this afternoon and tomorrow and will advise when it is once again safe to drink. We are hopeful that we will have those results by Friday afternoon. We will notify everyone via the media as well as this Facebook page and our webpage once we have received those results. Thank you for your cooperation and patience.

Kingston Water Department 15.01.2020

Update of repair of Linderman Avenue water main repair. At about 9:15am, personnel shut down the water to the break, so those in the affected area should have very low pressure/no water. We have located the break and hope to be down to it before noon. Once we have it exposed, we will be able to give everyone a better idea of when it will be done and water turned back on. The Kingston Fire Department has been included in our planning and has activated plans to combat an emergency in the area that is without water.

Kingston Water Department 30.12.2019

On Wednesday, January 8, 2020, the Water Department will be repairing a leak on Linderman Avenue, near Burgevin Street. Due to the location, a large shut down will be required to make the repair and it will be necessary to shut off the water to residents on the following Streets: Linderman Ave. (just past Hewitt) Navarra Street Becket Street... Hillsworth Avenue Arlmont Street Melrose Avenue Hillcrest Avenue Glen Street Twin Ponds (the entire complex) Elaine Drive Allison Court Amy Court Loughran Court Boulevard south of Pettit to the City line. The Ulster County Complex at Golden Hill, including the Law Enforcement Center and the Golden Hill Health Care Facility, WILL NOT BE AFFECTED. To those residents in the impacted area, water will not be shut off on the 8th until sometime after 8am and work will continue until the repair is completed later that day. Once water is restored to your home, we advise that all water used for cooking and drinking be boiled until the results from bacterial testing are received. We will notify you once those test results are received. As work progresses, we will post updates on this page and well as on our webpage at https://www.kingston-ny.gov/water. The first report will be posted at about 10am on the morning of the 8th. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience. KWD

In an emergency seconds count! Be a good neighbor and don't pile the snow from your property atop the hydrant! The hydrant is barely visible to the right of the sign.

Kingston Water Department 08.12.2019

Just a reminder there are more than 950 hydrants in the City of Kingston and the important hydrants are the ones that are near the fire! KFD and KWD personnel will work to shovel them out as quickly as we can, but we ask that anyone that can assist by shoveling out a hydrants to please do so. The life you save may be your own or someone you love!

Once the repair is done and service restored, the excavation will be backfilled and the road reopened to traffic. Full restoration of the curbing and pavers will be done tomorrow. Again, thank you for your patience.

Kingston Water Department 14.10.2019

Just a reminder. To install new pipelines, our contractor, Schultz Construction, has received permission from the UC DPW to close Sawkill Road in the Town of Ulster from Washington Avenue to the Route 209 overpass. The detour is Route 209. Since the actual excavation will be just north of the Unitarian Universalist Church and just south of Charleton Precision, everyone working or living along this section of Sawkill will be able to access their home or business from one side or the other. However, if you travel the length of Sawkill you will need to use the detour to get where you are going. The road will close at 5am tomorrow 11/5/19 and will reopen by 5 PM on 11/6/19. We apologize for the interruption and inconvenience as we work to improve our infrastructure and resiliency.

Kingston Water Department 24.08.2019

A flow test will be conducted at 300 Flatbush Ave. tomorrow 8/9/19 beginning at about 9 am. The test should last a few minutes. Residents in the area may experience discolored water during this test. If you experience rusty water, please run the cold water for a few minutes until it clears. In advance, thank you for your cooperation and patience.

Kingston Water Department 07.08.2019

We apologize for the rusty water in the area surrounding Wurts and Pierpont. However, without authorization, the HBO crew took water out of 2 hydrants causing a surge in the water system. KWD personnel are flushing the entire area. From time to time, construction firms or others need to access water from a hydrant. KWD has a permit process in place so that they can be provided with a meter and a backflow device so that the system is not contaminated or becomes discolored. Only KWD and KFD are authorized to use hydrants without obtaining a permit. If you see anyone else taking water from a hydrant, please contact us at 845-331-0205 so that we can check it out! Thank you.

The main break on Mary's Avenue and Hoffman Street has been repaired. This was a dificult repair due to the location of the 2 Central Hudson gas mains which meant that most of the excavation had to be done by hand.

Kingston Water Department 22.06.2019

There is a main break at the intersection of Mary's and Hoffman. We are on scene and will remain so until it is repaired. Traffic is restricted to one lane on each street as a result. We have been watching the water come and go in this intersection for some time and have been checking it daily this winter. Unfortunately, until this morning we had no indication that it was a leak as there were no charateristic leak noises or any chlorine residual. That changed this morning and we are in the process of makimg the repair. We ask that you avoid the intersection if possible and we thank you for your patience.

Kingston Water Department 03.06.2019

There is a water main break at the intersection of East Union St & Sycamore St. We will have a crew working to repair the leak. Water will need to be shut off to repair the leak. When water is restored, customers in the area could experience brown or rusty water. If this should occur, please run your cold water for a few minutes to clear. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Kingston Water Department 23.05.2019

Due to the Storm, the Business Office of the Kingston Water Department closed at 3pm. It will repopen tomorrow 2/13/2019 at 8:30am. Please drive carefully and be safe!

Kingston Water Department 10.05.2019

The Kingston Water Department is aware that there is water coming up in an old Central Hudson patch at Mary's Avenue and Hoffman Street. We have been monitoring this situation for several months and are presently salting it as required. Currently, there is no indication that this is a water main break or leak from our system. We have tested the water several times and cannot detect any chlorine residual - something that is present in our water- and do not hear any tell tale signs of a leak when we listen on our main and hydrants. We will continue to monitior the situation as conditions can change. If we determine that it is a leak, we will make the necessary repair. However, at this time, there is no indication that this is coming from the water system.

Kingston Water Department 28.04.2019

Just a quick update on the leak on CLinton Avenue at Henry Street. With the assistance of Garrison Equipment from Vineland NJ, we were able to get a shut down on the water main and our personnel are completing the repair. We anticipate all work will be completed by early evening and the road opened to traffic. We thank the public for their good wishes and cooperation. Most especially, the Water Department would like to send a big thank you to DPW Superintendent Ed Norman and his staff. Without the assistance of personnel and equipment from DPW, this repair would not have been completed as quickly and efficiently as it was. Special thanks to Ed Boyle and Don Markle of DPW for their expertise in doing the excavations for us and Ralph Perry for running loads of fill and anything else that needed doing!

There is a water main break on our 16-inch transmission main at the intersection of Clinton St. and Henry St. Our personnel have been on site since mid-day and have been unable to get a shut down so that we can make the repair. Crews are still at it and will remain on site until the repair is complete. However, it may be necessary to bring in an outside contractor to complete the work. We will update folks as we can but thus far, no one is out of water. We ask that you avoid that intersection if at all possible.

During the roof repair at City Hall, access to the front of City Hall will be restricted. However, the Business Office of the KWD is open and access from Jansen Avenue to our front door will remain open with egress to Broadway. For those doing business with the Water Department, there is limited parking along the curb in front of our office and in our driveway adjacent to the office. As always, you can pay your bill from your car using our pnuematic tube and there is a night deposit box for after hours payments.
