Fun Fact Friday! Did you know?? Historically the BOBBY PIN came into wide use in the 1920s when the hair style known as the BOB CUT or BOBBED HAIR took hold. Women, who didn’t want to cut their hair short, could mimic the look with bobby pins, which kept the hot new hair styles in place. Nicholas French, 5-time NAHA winner

TBT "Twisted Locks" Dreadlocks have often been perceived as a hairstyle associated with 20th century Jamaican and Rastafarian culture, but according to Dr. Bert Ashe’s book, Twisted: My Dreadlock Chronicles, one of the earliest known recordings of the style has been found in the Hindu Vedic scriptures. In its Indian origins, the jaTaa, which means wearing twisted locks of hair, was a hairstyle worn by many of the figures written about 2,500 years ago.

Fun Fact Friday Oh Nooo, Please Get That Cheese Grater Away From Your Feet!! ... This utensil is considered a banned item in salons in many states including NY, because it can not only injure you, but also spread infection. (And while some states allow look-alike metal files or rasps, others prohibit them along with any other sharp devices.) Whether they’re legal in your area or not, one thing’s for sure: It’s never a good idea to use them on the fragile skin of your feet. In fact, one expert says it’s the worst idea. The thickening of the skin on the feet is protective and can help keep out fungus and bacteria. Grating this thickened skin is basically opening up that area to bacteria, fungus, and yeast, says Lana Pinchasov, a dermatology-certified physician’s assistant in New York City. It may feel smooth for a few days, but once the skin grows back it can often grow back thicker and harder with some scar tissue. If you’ve already used harsh tools a time or two, don’t freak out: your feet can eventually heal and get back to normal. When you’re young and healthy, you’ll unlikely do too much damage that can’t be readily fixed, however we generally would recommend more gentle implements of callus destruction, says New York City-based podiatrist Ernest L. Isaacson, DPM.

How about a little Throw back Thursday about the beauty industry!! Why Did Cleopatra Wear Makeup? Over five thousand years ago, the ancient Egyptians used eye shadow, not only for cosmetic but practical purposes as well. Dark pigment painted around the eye helped protect the eye from the bright midday sun glaring off the desert sands.... The earliest eye paint in ancient Egypt was a thick, bright green paste made from the mineral malachite. Rainbow Of Cosmetics By the time Queen Cleopatra came to power in the 1st century BC, Egyptian women had at their disposal a whole rainbow of cosmetics, all of which were made from rocks, minerals, and plants in the region. Cleopatra used the bright green malachite paste of the ancient Egyptians on her lower eyelids. On her upper eyelids, she used a deep blue eye shadow with gold-colored pyrite flecks, made from ground lapis lazuli stone. She darkened her eyebrows and lengthened her eyelashes with black kohl, a mixture of powdered lead sulfide and animal fat. And for lipstick and rouge, Cleopatra used red ochre, a type of clay colored red by iron oxide. Nail Polish The Egyptian queen even wore nail polish, made of the reddish-brown dye called henna, which comes from the Egyptian privet tree. And Cleopatra often had her palms painted with henna in elaborate designs. Like the ancient Egyptians before her, Cleopatra used her cosmetics not simply for beauty's sake, but for certain benefits that beauty might bring. With Julius Caesar as her lover and, later, Marc Antony as her husband, Cleopatra consolidated Egypt's power with that of Rome.
