Sargeant Ranger Henry Meriko lost his life in an ambush protecting elephants at the #garambanationalpark in the Congo. Another soldier was also killed along with two poachers and two elephants. The background of the painting is a repeated pattern of an elephant skull in fluorescent pink.Conservationists dye elephants’ tusks pink to render the ivory valueless to poachers. While conservationists focus on losses to the animal population, this painting brings to light the cost of human life. #kevinconnollygillespie #artexhibition #art #painting #ghostsofourfuture #artgallery #kusteraprojects #kusteraprojectsredhook #redhook #brooklyn

It’s hard to imagine the impending extinction of the Earth’s wild creatures as a possible reality. The loss of these animals is due in large part to poaching, sport hunting and the harvesting of their ivory and horns as trophies and medicines. In ‘Trophy 1’ by @kevcongil a highly reflective chromed elephant skull, symbolic of high luxury, sits upon a patterned background of the Yuan symbol representing Chinese currency. On closer inspection of the skull, a live shooter can be seen amongst the reflected landscape inciting a sense of doom. #ghostsofourfuture is on view @kusteraprojectsredhook through July 27th. #kevinconnollygillespie #painting #trophy1 #artexhibition #elephant #poaching #kusteraprojects #kusteraprojectsredhook #redhook #brooklyn
