Starting when I was eleven and ending when I was I was thirty-three, I danced in some version of The Nutcracker. In fact, The Nutcracker was what made my twin brother Kurt (@kurtfroman) and I want to take ballet in the first place. My heart goes out to all the dancers who are missing performances this year because of COVID. Rest assured there will be plenty mice, soldiers, snowflakes and sugar plums for you in 2021. She was Sara Leland to the public but Sally to anyone who knew her. After a long career at New York City Ballet as a Balanchine ballerina she transitioned to the roles of ballet mistress with the company and repetiteur for the trust. During my fourteen years at NYCB, I personally only worked with her once in La Valse. But her impact on the principal and soloist dancers around me was was mesmerizing to watch. She had a loud voice that bordered on a shout, something both uncou...th in the icy ballet world but also charming. Her voice was like her dancing had been- bold and carefree. That, along with her signature oversized sweatsuit, white sneakers and clipped-back hair broke the tension in so many rehearsals. Her passion for the NYCB and continuing its legacy was remarkable to watch. Rest In Peace, Sally Leland.
