Laura Pessoa was born in Queens but grew up in Minas Gerais, Brazil. At 18, she returned to the U.S. for the first time, in order to make a better life for herself. After many financial struggles, she encountered opportunity in LaGuardia Community College, where she is pursuing a Liberal Arts: Math and Science degree. Laura dreams of leaving a positive impact on the world, however small it may be, and believes the best way to do so is through fighting for equal access to scie...ntific advancements. She seeks to achieve this goal by continuing her education to become a Podiatrist, helping ensure children of all circumstances receive quality care, and promoting a health system centered around the patient instead of monetary gains. In her second semester in LaGCC, Laura became a Student Success Leader for Queens Community House, where she has supported freshmen students in adapting to College for more than a year. This experience made her desire to be more engaged on campus, and, in February, she was elected Co-VP of Scholarship for Alpha Theta Phi, where she served as officer for 3 months. Laura has learned to love the enthusiasm and dedication of PTK Officers and members alike, and is committed to improving the Chapter during her run as the 2020-21 School year Vice-President. It's been a crazy year for the 2019-2020 officer team. We've had ups and downs, ins and outs, successes and even a few failures. But, we're stronger in the end and we know the new officer team will reach even greater heights by building upon the foundations we've laid. We would also like to congratulate our newest inductees! Welcome to the PTK family! This achievement is a not a just a reward, but also recognition and proof of your hard work.... To the 2020-2021 Alpha Theta Phi officer team as well as the new inductees: You have a once in a lifetime challenge ahead of you, but as they say, only the hottest of fires forges the hardest of steel and we know you're not only capable, but eager to climb the mountain ahead of you. You have the keys to success, if you only choose to use them. We'll leave you with the words of @drblakeellis: "Now, go change the world"
