Our thoughts are with our brothers and sisters in nearby Rockland County today as they grieve the immense loss of Firefighter Jared Lloyd of the Spring Valley Fire Dept. Firefighter Lloyd went missing for several hours after calling a MAYDAY while searching the third floor of an assisted living facility engulfed in heavy flame before it partially collapsed. News outlets have reported that Firefighter Lloyd was one of the first to rush into the building to perform rescues of trapped residents. The LCFD’s relationship with Rockland County departments began in 2002 with the beginning of an annual weekend long training program for junior firefighters . Over the years many friendships have been formed and our hearts break for them during this tragic ordeal. R.I.P. Firefighter Jared Lloyd

Happy Hanukkah from the LCFD!

THIS SATURDAY! Santa leaves LCFD headquarters at 9am. Listen for the sirens and come outside to meet Santa and his LCFD elves as they spread Christmas cheer and hand out candy canes all over the Lake Carmel Fire District.... Santa and LCFD elves alike will be observing social distancing guidelines and wearing masks so please be sure to do the same. The annual pictures with the big guy will look a little different this year as we can not allow any physical contact to take place. We can’t have Santa in quarantine on Christmas Eve, he has a big job to do! Let’s all do our part to make sure he can do it. We are once again collecting for Toys For Tots so please consider donating new and unwrapped toys that can be handed right to our members on Saturday . We look forward to seeing everyone this weekend as we carry on our favorite Christmas tradition!

As we all begin our holiday decorating please remember that real Christmas trees need to be watered regularly! A dry Christmas tree is dangeous. In just a few seconds a fire can spread rapidly as seen in the video. Let’s all be diligent and have a safe and happy holiday season. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_eHBqVYa8A

Today the LCFD celebrated it’s 75th anniversary! It’s not exactly how we had planned to celebrate serving the Lake Carmel community since 1945 but we couldn’t let it just pass us by.(We gathered for a quick picture and immediately returned to social distancing.)In addition to commerating this event we wanted to recognize an outstanding member with over 40 years of service. Today Chief Donohue awarded Firefighter Ed Keck the rank of Honorary Chief. He was given his white hat... and 5 stripe jacket! For those that are unaware, these are the traditional symbols that mark the rank of Chief in the fire service .Ed has been an exemplary member, an outstanding teacher and terrific role model for newer members. He is always one of the first to step up when help is needed no matter what time of day or night. During his tenure he has held the ranks of Lieutenant and Captain and been one of our most active drivers, always getting the apparatus where it needs to be and performing expertly at the pump panel. We at LCFD are both proud and lucky to have him. From the bottom of our hearts Ed, THANK YOU for all that you do. You are irreplaceable. See more

Here we go again. Prepare early! If we lose power( haha if , we’re totally losing power) remember to keep generators WELL AWAY from your home with the exhaust facing AWAY from windows and doors. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should a running generator be inside your home.

It is with great sadness that the LCFD announces the passing of Life Member Lewis Ellman. Lew joined the department on December 6, 1972 and remained an active member until he became ill. Lew was our treasurer, an important yet thankless job, from 1978-1993. He always worked behind the scenes to keep the department running like a well oiled machine and his absence in day to day operations has already been felt. Our thoughts are with the Ellman family.RIP Lew

MARK YOUR CALANDERS! On December 12 the LCFD will have the honor of escorting Santa to pass out candy canes around the Lake Carmel Fire District. As always we will also be collecting Toys For Tots donations. On that day listen for the sirens and grab your coat and shoes to come out for some candy canes and pictures.

Yesterday the LCFD responded to multiple calls during the storm that ranged from EMS to structural collapses. Today the power is still out county wide and the hum of generators fills the air. Please STAY AWAY from downed power lines. Always assume wires are live. Do NOT walk or drive over them. Help us to help you by using proper practices for home generators. Carbon Monoxide is a SILENT KILLER! Generators should NEVER be inside your home. Stay safe.

****STORM UPDATE**** Although the storm has passed, there are still numerous areas with trees and wires down. Even though there is a widespread power outage, w...ires could still be charged. Crews are out trying to clear the roads but this will take time. Due to darkness, you will not be able to see the hazardous conditions so PLEASE STAY OFF THE ROADS for your safety and the safety of our responders. As far as water and dry ice, we should have info on that availability by tomorrow afternoon and will post an update once we do. Please share this info with your family and neighbors so we can keep phone lines of emergency services clear for emergency calls only. Thank you and be safe! See more

Happy Halloween! A few saftey reminders about the impending Trick or Treating: Make sure you and your children are VISIBLE using either flashlights, glow sticks or reflective tape. Keep to the SIDE of the road and check driveways for cars that may be backing out before crossing in front of them.... Stay in GROUPS ( if possible), they are easier for drivers to see. Drivers go SLOW! It goes without saying that all candy should be checked by adults before pigging out. EVERYTHING should be factory sealed. Have fun! This year we have some special things to consider in regards to Covid-19 Social distancing rules apply Avoid direct contact with trick-or-treaters. Give out treats outdoors, if possible. Set up a station with individually bagged treats for kids to take. Wash hands before handling treats. Wear a mask! ( not just the Halloween kind) Below are some more Halloween tips from the National Fire Protection Association.

National First Responders Day on October 28 recognizes the heroic men and women who make it their business to take immediate action when disaster strikes. Not sure what a first responder does? Just think about 9/11 for a moment. Firefighters, police, paramedics, and more rushing into Lower Manhattan. Whether you’ve had your own emergency or not, it’s not hard to understand and appreciate the dangerous and difficult work they do. We’re always looking for more members. Become a first responder with the LCFD. Come to our headquarters at 851 Rt 52 on a Sunday morning to pick up an application and talk to our members! https://nationaltoday.com/national-first-responders-day/

NYSEG held a municipal call with public officials in anticipation of Tropical Storm Isaias which expected to hit the area after midnight tonight. This strong st...orm system is expected to begin with rain after midnight. The storm could bring with it 2-4 inches of rain. Wind speeds could potentially reach between 40-50 MPH with gusts in excess of 50 MPH. The strongest wind speeds are forecasted to be in the area after 5:00 pm 8/4/20 until midnight. NYSEG is making preparations for the storm. They will have 68 line crews and 38 tree crews throughout the Brewster Service Division to respond to areas that may sustain damages due to the storm. The NYSEG Emergency reporting number for the public is 800-572-1131. Feel free to reach out to my office as well at 845-225-3943 or [email protected]. This is forecast to be a very strong storm system which has the potential to cause flooding and take down trees and large limbs. Road clearing and making safe will be NYSEG’s main priorities. Please be careful and stay safe.
