John Brown Lives!, North Country Community College, Lake Flower Landing, and Bluseed Studios are pleased to co-sponsor a virtual screening of award-winning short film Ohero:Kon (Under the Husk) by Katsitsionni Fox, Thursday, September 24 at 7:30 pm. Registration is required. Ohero:kon "Under the Husk (26-minutes), is a documentary that follows the journey of two Mohawk girls who take a four-year passage rites ceremony to become Mohawk women. Kaienkwinehtha and Kasennakohe a...re childhood friends from traditional families living in the Mohawk Community of Akwesasne. The ceremony is called Oheró:kon Under the Husk. The tradition has been revived in their community to challenge the girls spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically and to shape the women they become. The filmmaker, Katsitsionni Fox, is a member of the Mohawk Community of Akwesasne, population 12,000. It straddles the U.S./Canada border. It is a neighboring community to the sponsoring organizations located in the Tri-Lakes region of the Adirondacks. Watch online from September 2025. The September 24th screening at approximately 8 pm will be immediately followed by a conversation with Katsitsioni and one of the young women in the film. Ohero:kon Under the Husk, a PBS Broadcast in November 2018, won awards at the imaginNATIVE Film Festival, LA Skins Fest, the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival and Best Documentary at the Red Nation Film Festival. Katsitsionni Fox’s latest film, Without a Whisper, debuted at the Woods Hole Film Festival in 2020.
