True or False? When I’m hiking, it’s okay to throw my banana peel into the woods. False. Banana peels, apples, nut shells, gum, crust from your sandwich, etc. ...should all leave the outdoors with youpack it in, pack it out. While food thrown outside will break down over time, it doesn’t happen overnight or even after a couple weeks, sometimes taking up to 2 years. In the meantime, it’s an eyesore to other hikers and is potentially harmful to wildlife that might eat it. We can all protect New York’s wildlife and respect others enjoying the outdoors by packing out our food scraps. #LeaveNoTraceTuesday Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics See more

Absentee ballot applications for the upcoming Village election were mailed out on Monday and many have already received them today. They are going to all regis...tered voters of the Village. The polls will still be open on Tuesday, March 16, noon - 9 pm as usual, but the Village Board wanted to give everyone this option since there is some concern over Covid exposure. Please be aware of the following: Town Hall will be open for voting only on Election Day. You will not be able to pay bills, and will only be able to go to other offices by appointment, just as the case is now. If you vote absentee, but then change your mind and want to vote in person you will be able to do so. Absentee ballots aren't opened or counted until the polls close, so if we open one and the records show you already voted earlier in the day, your absentee ballot will be disposed of. If you live in the Village and are not yet registered, you can register with the Essex County Board of Elections until March 5. Call them at (518) 873-3474 for information. If you have any questions about the absentee application or voting in the Village in general, please contact the Clerk's office at 518-523-2584. Thank you!

We are delighted to have enough snow to cover the rails from Charlie's to Lake Placid and welcome riders to visit Lake Placid. We remind everyone that once arri...ving at the Lake Placid Firehouse the two destinations by trail are the Train Station or the Crown Plaza. Streets are not currently legal to ride in Lake Placid so we ask once arriving at either destination that you park then walk or take an Uber/Taxi to any other location. The main street is a short walk from the Crowne Plaza. There is no location for gas that is accessible by snowmobile in Lake Placid. It is recommended that if you need fuel to stop at Maplefields in Ray Brook or Stewart's in Saranac Lake. We thank you for considering Lake Placid as a destination, ride safe and enjoy the trails. Does this man look familiar? He recently broke into a gas station in Plattsburgh, and stole merchandise. The suspect is described as a white male, skinny build,... wearing what appears to be Carhartt coveralls, work boots, a black hoodie, and carrying a dark colored back pack. If you have information, please call State Police in Troop B at (518) 873-2777. See more

Upon checking the Ausable River Association livestream of Mirror Lake this afternoon I noticed that someone had falled through the ice earlier in the day. As so...meone that works on frozen lakes professionally I can't reiterate enough the importance of ice safety. That means looking at weather history for the past several days, wearing floatation, carrying ice picks, and checking the thickness of the ice yourself. Thankfully this person self rescued and appears to be fine. See more

***FYI*** No skating on Mirror Lake as of now. The Park District Staff measured the ice on Mirror Lake--there is between 3.5 and 4.5 inches in and around th...e beach and toboggan area. As people may or may not have seen, there are pressure cracks throughout the Lake which cause water to come up and make slushy conditions. At this time, Butch Martin would advise that people refrain from going on the Lake and utilize the public skating sessions at the Speedskating Oval and Olympic Center. He has spoken to Chief Bill Moore and his officers will also be monitoring the situation. It was just a week ago that the Lake was open from shore to shore. Next week looks much more promising. We will keep you updated.
