New Yorker nonprofit-led COVID-19 initiative: #PPEnow Hello, I'm Kim Nguyen, a hardware tech founder based out of NYC. As you've probably heard, NYC is hit very hard by the COVID-19 situation. Governor Cuomo today said that we're about 14-21 days from the peak of the crisis.... Healthcare workers are going into this battlefield unprotected. Friend after friend in healthcare tell me they're re-using masks, or are prepared to see patients unprotected and accept COVID-19 exposure. Ironically, each KN95 mask only costs ~$2 to produce and import into NYC. A group of manufacturers, nonprofits, and tech workers (many in my friend group) got together and established #PPEnow, (https://ppenow.org) a nonprofit that aims to raise funding to place orders on masks and donate them directly to NYC healthcare workers. Some key people involved have extensive experience in supply chain management, running community advocacy, and working with local New York government. So far, I've volunteered my time to build their website, making a database of frontline workers in need of masks & shipping address, and donated some of my own money to this cause. A few other people (Dropbox software engineers, supply chain experts, city policy makers) have also contributed. We are on the Benevity website as a cause - in case you work at a large corporation with a matching program. A few reasons I believe this nonprofit can make a difference is that they've acted with urgency. Within 5 days, I've seen the following happen: We've gotten a website established and accepting donations We currently have 10,000 N95 masks enqueue for US airfreight in Hong Kong Established a database of 252 local healthcare workers who have given us their address to receive donated protective equipment Partnership with 2 nonprofits who agreed to be our fiscal sponsors Lastly, as NYC needs become met, this model can scale nationally or globally to address needs outside of NYC.
