Happy birthday to Landmark owner, and Struble Arcade proprietor, Mr. Knafo! Here he is about 89 years ago, in his native Morocco. Obviously, Mr. Knafo brings decades of experience to the fine wine and spirits collection here at Landmark. In addition, he brings expertise from three continents: from his education in agronomy in France, from his career in the agriculture ministry of Morocco, and from his continuing education here in upstate New York at Cornell, and as well from his role as winemaker at Boordy Vineyards. Happy Birthday, Mr. Knafo! Come check out his fine selections for your upcoming July 4th celebration.

Another vintage "Uncork New York!" poster out of our collection, this one from an unknown year. In the lower left corner, photo credits are given to Widmer Wine Cellars (now closed), Pleasant Valley Wine Company (still a Hammondsport institution), New York Wine & Grape Foundation, Ralph Pugliese Jr, and King Ferry Winery (a Cayuga Winery now know as Treleaven). In the bottom right quadrant of the poster, around the glasses, the major wine regions of New York State are recogni...zed, "Long Island * Hudson River * Finger Lakes * Lake Erie." In the very corner it states, "Product of the USA." Center of the photo, on either side of the grape cluster states, "Discover the New World of World-Class Wines." You can continue to do just that at Landmark Wine and Spirits where after 40 years in business we continue to offer Treleaven and Pleasant Valley Wines' most recent vintages! Try the Pleasant Valley Creme Sherry! Yum!

Old illustration of the historic Struble's Arcade Building. Construction on this large and beautiful commerce building began in 1869. This illustration probably dates from the late nineteenth century. The offices for Penn Yan Democrat newspaper (1838-1948) were located in the second floor, with the post office below (Penn Yan's current post office building, also historic, was not built until 1912). Next to the post office, in the current location for Landmark Wine and Spirits..., you'll see Forster S. Roberts, purveyors of "Foreign and Domestic Dry Goods." But... what is the best clue for the time period of this illustration? It is the OYSTER STAND in the narrow alley next to the Dry Goods store (in the middle of what is now Maiden Lane). Did you know that in the late 19th Century, America in general and New York in particular were in the throes of an OYSTER CRAZE? Bluepoint oysters were transported inland from New England fish markets, in wagons filled with ice, and sold to hungry folks from these street kiosks - usually garnished with vinegar, lemon, and horseradish. You can't get oysters over at the Struble Arcade Building anymore but you CAN get many lovely wines that compliment them beautifully at Landmark.
