Larchmont VAC 01.05.2021

Since 1981, the second week of April has been known as National Public Safety Telecommunications Week. A week that honors the first of first responders, our emergency dispatchers, or as we know them, "60 Control". Our Friends of 60 Control serve as the first step in emergency care, answering 911 calls and beginning pre-arrival care. They give us crucial information as we respond while delivering lifesaving instructions to those calling for help. Their innate ability to stay c...alm in time of chaos is an irreplaceable asset. Yesterday, as a small token of thanks, we partnered with our colleagues at the Town of Mamaroneck Fire Department to present 60 Control with new kitchenware for their facility. Working long 12-hour shifts means many missed meals at home and we hope that this gift will make their time away a little easier. Larchmont VAC is forever grateful for the voice on the other end, thank you for all you do!

We are excited to continue our series highlighting the achievements of our different members and showcasing their unique lives beyond LVAC. For our April showcase, we would like you to meet Toni Driscoll! As a child, Toni watched her mother in action as a member of City Island VAC. Toni was long fascinated by the stories her mom would tell, wanting to know everything she could about her calls. Growing up, Toni helped her mom as she taught EMT class, often as the mock patient..., always sure to soak up as much knowledge as she could. A few years ago, Toni was speaking with a co-worker, who happened to formerly have been a paramedic. This was all she needed, her interest in EMS was instantly rekindled. After a brief search, Toni had completed her application. After receiving her NYS EMT, Toni passed the National EMT exam, ensuring she could render care to those in need wherever she was. Beyond volunteering with us, Toni can be found working at Scarsdale Medical Group as a medical assistant and supervisor, and Empress EMS as an EMT. Additionally, with further education and passion for medicine in mind, Toni is currently enrolled in the paramedic program at Westchester Community College. Toni is always around to pick up an extra shift and has remained one of our most consistent members throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. She additionally assisted Scarsdale Medical Group with COVID-19 testing. Most recently, Toni has become a NYS certified vaccinator, leading the charge to vaccinate the community. With all these attributes, it’s no wonder that Toni has risen through our ranks. Thanks in part to these virtues, her fellow members elected her lieutenant, a role she starts today! The motto of Larchmont VAC, Second to None, is easily displayed through Toni’s devotion to the Corps. Due to her selflessness, she is consistently looking for ways to give back to the community, whether through her time on the ambulance or at work. This selflessness meant many family functions were held via FaceTime last spring for fear of spreading COVID to her family. We would like to congratulate Toni on being our April featured member!

The thoughts of Larchmont VAC are with our brothers and sisters of the Spring Valley Fire Department as they mourn the loss of one of their own. Firefighter Jared Lloyd, a 15 year member, died in the line of duty, while battling a multi-alarm fire early Tuesday morning. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and fellow firefighters.

Our on and off duty members took advantage of the exceptionally beautiful day to do some early spring cleaning and get rid of the winter dirt! A clean truck, inside and out, makes for a happy crew! How did you spend the day?

Early this morning Larchmont VAC responded to a multi-patient accident on I95. While our first due ambulance was en route, our partners at the Village of Mamaroneck Fire Department requested a third ambulance to the scene. Within minutes off duty members were able to assemble, and we were able to quickly turn out our second truck, ensuring a rapid response for patient care. In all, we transported five patients to Jacobi Medical Center. Interested in learning more about us or joining? Visit us online! www.larchmontvac.org

Larchmont VAC members responded this evening to a multi-alarm fire in the Village of Mamaroneck, along with our partners at Mamaroneck EMS. At a fire scene, ambulances stage a short distance away from the fire to ensure a clear path to the hospital or to additional calls for service. One crew will bring their stretcher and other lifesaving equipment closer to the fire scene, so they are ready to immediately provide care. For more information about us, visit www.larchmontvac.org.

The members that make up Larchmont Volunteer Ambulance Corps. come from a wide array of professional backgrounds. We are proudly made up of police officers, firefighters, students, technology specialists, lawyers, contractors, and many other professions. We are excited to reintroduce our monthly series, highlighting the achievements of our members and showcasing their life beyond the Corps. This month, we would like to introduce you to Jackson Baker! Jackson has been a ...member of Larchmont VAC for almost three years. He joined in April 2018, and quickly became an invaluable asset to the Corps and his fellow members. Jackson has dedicated more than 1,000 hours to Larchmont VAC, going above and beyond to serve the Town of Mamaroneck, Village of Larchmont, and surrounding communities. In the three years Jackson has been a member, he has risen through the ranks, assuming the position of captain of the Junior Corps., a subset of members under 18 years of age. He’s also taken on a prominent role in our membership committee, continuing to help grow the ranks of Larchmont VAC. As a member of the training committee, Jackson shares the responsibility of training new members on all aspects of LVAC and the care we render. Jackson is an asset to the training committee, bringing the experience and perspectives from his work at Ossining VAC and Westchester EMS to the frequent training sessions held at LVAC. After obtaining his New York State EMT certification at the age of 17, Jackson took the extra step of earning his National Registry EMT, allowing him to practice in any state. Small steps such as this ensure that Jackson is always ready to help those in need. In the winter of 2019, Jackson was granted early acceptance to Georgetown University where he intends to pursue a degree in Human Science. Georgetown instituted remote learning as a result of COVID-19, and Jackson decided to take a gap year, enrolling in a paramedic program to further his skills and increase the level of care that he can bring to the community. The dedication by Jackson to volunteer is deeply appreciated by the members of Larchmont VAC, especially as he pursues a challenging course to become a New York State paramedic. Despite a demanding schedule, Jackson prides himself on making sure he’s always ready to serve the community in which he lives. Our motto here at Larchmont VAC, Second to None, is easily shown through Jackson’s actions both on and off the ambulance. Jackson is a skilled EMT, leader, and is sure to be an excellent paramedic. For all that Jackson does, we sincerely thank him for his service and congratulate him on being our February featured member! Interested in learning more about us or joining?
