The sap from all 24,000 taps is pouring in at about 3,000 gallons per hour! The freeze last night to recharge the trees, paired with today’s sun and rising temperatures, created a perfect day to make some syrup!

Just getting started with today’s boil. We use an oil fired evaporator which can begin making syrup pretty quickly. We start drawing off,(when the syrup is finished being boiled), after only about 10 to 15 minutes!

Yesterday was a family affair with all 3 sons in the sugar house! Shane and girlfriend Jenna helped get some canning done and Kyle helped Darren out with boiling.

Earlier this morning our 4,000 tap home sugar bush was running around 450 gallons of sap per hour, with our vacuum at 28.5 inches. As the day goes on and the weather warms we should see this bush hit 600 gallons of sap per hour!

Sunshine and warmer weather mean the sap is running!

Our sap comes from 24,000 taps. These green or blue lines that you see in the woods take the sap to a collection point. We use a gradual grade and a vacuum system to get it there, which just like it sounds, sucks or pulls the sap down to our collection buildings. The gauge shows our vacuum level, working the best when we’re close to 29 inches, like this one shows. This number can go down if animals have chewed the lines, for example, and created holes, leaks as we call them, which is why we leak check all throughout the season.

The steam is rolling! First boil of the season is underway, starting with 30,000+ gallons of sap. This will equate to approximately 375 gallons of syrup.

Starting young, 6 year old Ellie tapped Maple Mabel yesterday! She had been looking forward to tapping her own tree since the start of the season.

I sprayed mud out of a skid steer today for 5 hours and would have happily paid someone else to do it. I can stack you up, with 40+ hrs a week of tasks I would love to get off my back. Week after week after week. Here’s the trick- we have to shower when we get home, not when we’re getting ready to leave- And that’s just not sexy I suppose. My plumber has had a help wanted sign flashing for every one of the 15 years I’ve known him. My deck & fence guys would hire 5-6 guys tomorrow. My electrician would hire 20 guys if he could find them. My roofer, my framer, concrete, hardwood floor, tile, actually hang on- I can simplify...... Every. Single. Professional I work with in the construction industry would hire you, train you, pay you (well), and honestly- Love on you a good bit and invite you into their families. I see it happen everyday. Problem is, it’s hard. We’re not nice, and we will absolutely, 110% make fun of you when you screw up. It’s how all of us knuckledraggers work. It’s been that way for generations, and it won’t stop with your candy ass either. Guess what? I’m about to blow your mind. You ready? None of them got a stimulus check. Hang on.....Wait for it!.....THEY. ALL. MAKE. TOO. MUCH. MONEY. So, quit the shit. You are not going to Lose everything, without this bill. It just gives you a few more weeks of that tit in your mouth.
