The very BEST thing you can do for your lawn is to aerate!! Technically speaking, aeration is the naturally occurring process of air exchange between the soil and its surrounding atmosphere. Practically speaking, aeration is the process of mechanically removing small plugs of thatch and soil from the lawn to improve natural soil aeration. There are MANY benefits from aerating but to mention a few: Enhances soil water uptake, improves fertilizer uptake and use, reduces water runoff and puddling, stronger turfgrass roots, and reduces soil compaction. Cool-season turf, such as Kentucky Blue and fescues, should be cut between 3-4 inches (usually the highest mower deck setting). This height is better for drought tolerance as well as grass plant health. Generally, taller grass means deeper roots but you don’t want it to get too long to avoid insect infestations and nasty looks from your neighbors. Don’t remove more than one-third of the leaf surface in one mow and be sure to only mow only when grass is dry and with a sharp blade on the mower. The wet conditions in the Rochester area are causing the infestation in lawns of the perennial, grassy weed Nutsedge (aka Nutgrass).
