Lay-Z Ducks Farm 15.01.2021

I got up a bit early this morning because I am taking a road trip downstate and leaving Philip in charge of the farm, so I wanted to make sure everything that needed to be done was complete so I would not overload him with chores. This morning I planned on completing the repair to the overhead portion of the smaller of the two turkey enclosures after the 56 miles per hour winds decided that it needed to be replaced. I let the boys out this morning at five and noticed that all of my remaining turkey hens are sleeping on the very top of the pen, approximately 16 feet. Those hens are excellent escape artists and will take full advantage of any situation. At first light I will be doing the turkey rodeo again. Thank goodness my ducks are too fat and lazy to attempt these shenanigans.

Today's events on the farm include cleaning out the bedding areas. It's a smelly job, but it's all going into the gardens so it's the gift that keeps on giving. I've had lots of time to get ready for winter this year. All of my feathered children are building new nesting areas and producing lots of eggs. (For sale). Two of my obers are in heat, hopefully we can get some kids for spring. The cheese that I've been making from the goats is getting better with each batch that comes out of the kitchen. I'm making mozzerella today! And finally the ducks are starting to become pretty regular in their egg production, just in time for holiday baking. Life is pretty good when you're surrounded my farm animals.

What a gorgeous day outside. I couldn't believe it when I went out to milk the girls. This will be a great day to clean out the bedding to replace with fresh hay because I've heard snow is coming, and Tilly, Snickers and Abby love to snuggle in the hay. I'm getting ready to dry my girls up so we can make more babies for spring. I'm so excited! The molting season is almost over, and those chickens are ready to go. Turkeys are still putting on Thanksgiving weight. And Bogie and Bacall (ducks) are just happy being themselves, giving me that one precious egg every morning. Have a great day!

We decided this morning that it was time to start culling out the turkeys. We will be keeping a few paired mates and some of the gals for egg production, but the rest will be for Thanksgiving. The first to go will be the escapees.
