Only one week until the state budget is due! Make sure your representatives know where you stand on funding for Democracy Reforms including redistricting, early... voting, and absentee voting. Contact your legislator and urge them to fund democracy in the 2022 budget! Find Your Assembly Member: https://nyassembly.gov/mem/search/ Find Your Senator: https://www.nysenate.gov/find-my-senator Assembly Switchboard: 518-455-4100 Senate Switchboard: 518-455-2800 Sample Phone Script/Email: Hello, I am calling/emailing the Senator/Assembly Member today to urge them to support funding for early voting and no-excuse absentee voting and the new Independent Redistricting Commission in the fiscal year 2021-2022 budget. Over the last several years, the Legislature has made incredible improvements to our voting operations including allowing for early voting and greater access to absentee voting. These new policy reforms require an investment from the state in order to be fully realized. I urge the Legislator to support new funding in the budget for the implementation and expansion of early voting and no-excuse absentee voting. This year is also important because our legislative lines are being redrawn by an Independent Redistricting Commission. I urge the Legislator to ensure new funding is included in the budget for this Commission to do its work. These new funds should be independent of any other agency or entity so that the Commission is free from outside influence. 2021 is an exciting year for democracy reforms and I hope you will pass along my message to the Senator/Assembly Member to fully fund early voting and no-excuse absentee voting, and the Independent Redistricting Commission. Thank you.

News from NYS LWV State Board of Elections Meets to Certify Election Results The State Board of Elections (SBOE) met today to certify New York's 2020 elections results. The state did not certify the 22nd Congressional district race between Anthony Brindisi and Claudia Tenney but did certify all other races even those with outstanding ballots because the remaining ballots would not be enough to change the outcome of the results.... The staff reported that 8.6 million voters turned out for this election - 873,000 more than 4 years ago, a truly impressive number considering the challenges of the ongoing pandemic. The SBOE received a 5 million grant for the Center for Election Information and Research leading up to the election to conduct voter outreach. These funds were spent on digital ads outlining the three ways to vote in 2020. The SBOE also administered 7 grants to county board of elections that were spent on training, education, poll site enhancements, e-poll books, and cyber security. Over all these grants totaled more than $46 million. The SBOE will also be updating their voter registration form and affidavit form to change which parties now qualify to appear on registration forms. Because of new standards, the Green, Libertarian, Independence, and SAM parties will no longer be an option on voter registration forms. The SBOE has also submitted their annual budget request which includes a new funding request for the newly created Campaign Finance Commission. The staff recognized that the commission is behind schedule because of a lack of funding in 2020. Two commissioners must still be appointed - one from the Governor and one from the Republican legislative leaders. The SBOE said that they hoped to have those appointments made by their next meeting in January.

Happy #GivingTuesday! This year give to support accessible non-partisan voter education for all New Yorkers. In 2020 the League's voter guide Vote411.org was v...iewed by over 6 million unique visitors. More than 350,000 voters took advantage of this new offering and viewed their candidate's guide in Spanish. Why is election certification important? When Americans vote in a presidential election, they are actually voting in a state contest, not a national one. They are voting for state electors who will then cast one vote each for president. These electors usually follow the will of the electorate - BBC.com
