Ever since I was a young boy I could remember my father using old hand tools when I used to accompany him to work. The two most notable ones I remember were his hands planes and a manual drill. (And this was in the early 90's.) And one thing I can clearly remember is that no matter what day he had to plane something, his hand plane was always wicked sharp. So of course as a kid, I made it my job to go around and pick up the long curled up shavings. So when I embarked on my co...nstruction journey, I would often think about these memories and even though it's modern times, and I had an electric hand plane, I still wanted a "old fashioned" manual hand plane. Yeah I could have bought one brand new, but I had started out watching some restoration videos on YouTube and I saw a few guys restoring old planes and I wanted to do that. So to my luck, a friend of mine have me one which beloved to his girlfriend's grandfather who was a woodworker (God rest his soul ). It's a @stanleytools Handyman series. I used a website and dated it to around the 40's. So I took it apart, cleaned all the dirt and rust off, serviced the bottom to make sure it was flat, and got around to sharpening the blade. I used a combination of a simple whetstone, and water. Lastly, I gave it a new paint job and put it all back together. And there it is. #tbt To the penthouse project we worked on last year. This is the level of quality that we execute our projects with. Not only painting, but everything. (And yes, we cleaned up those three tiny bleeds.) This whole 3 bed, 3-1/2 bath penthouse was done up with @farrowandball Cornforth White with the Modern Emulsion finish on the walls ceilings, base, and custom window stool we built. The doors were also Farrow & Ball, same finish but the color was Downpipe. We sprayed the doors... and all trim. Actual speed footage of me tearing up some tiles on a kitchen floor for a job we were supposed to complete. But for anyone wondering, tiles installed properly should never come up this easily. All I used for this demo was a @dewalttough demo hammer and a demo screwdriver. But for this, we removed the countertop, sink, dishwasher, and two base cabinets.... Quarantine woodwork projects have been keeping me sane, lol! So since my lovely wife and business partner @mrscnq2016 needed some bathroom storage, I made some. Went with some sleek 10"x10" miter-folded 1/2" birch plywood pieces for the bottom and all sides. The edge banding was some 1/4" oak strips I ripped down to 1/2" on my @dewalttough DWE7480 table saw.... I glued all of the folds together with @titebondproducts Titebond II wood glue. I also kept any stubborn joints together with tape and @collinstoolco Miter Clamps. After assembly and sanding, I stained the outside with @minwaxusa Provincial Pine, painted the inside with @sherwimwilliams Emerald Trim Enamel Finish: Semi-Gloss, Color: Snowbound. And lastly, I finished the outside with Odie's Wax by @odiesoil. My favorite wood finish for my small furniture projects. The client loves them and I'm satisfied. So I had the pleasure of assembling this toy work bench for the son of one of my very first clients. It's decked out with everything a kid could ever need to be influenced in the direction of construction. And I thank God mom for noticing that there is a spark in her child for this. Usually every time I go to their place to do dinner work and he's there he insists on showing me his tools in comparison to mine. I'm glad that he sees what I'm doing and is curious and intrigue...d. It reminds me of how I was watching my dad growing up. To the point where, while other kids were asking their dads for toys and games, I was asking mine for tools like his. And he would get them for me! (Not the dangerous ones...) So I say all of this to say, if you can lead a youth to the trades, please do so. So here is a mistake that's rather basic, but maybe someone can get a small nugget from. So I was trimming out this door and I went into this super prepared! I cut some rather clean miters (if I may say so myself), I had my @collinstoolco miter clamps ready to go, my @titebondproducts Quick and Thick was at hand, and I was ready to preassemble. And that's where the mistake came in. I applied a good bit of glue, maybe too good , and I got distracted for a moment and the glue ...had already started going off by the time I got around to applying the clamps and I didn't realize. So not until I finished the assembly did I notice that small gap in my joint. I say all of this to say, if your using that glue, don't get distracted like me. After you glue, clamp and wipe right away, trust me. The best feeling is going from concept to completion! We replaced this window stool in the penthouse project we are working on, which was 3/4" MDF with 5/4" pine. These both rooms total 41' and we cut the stock and routed the channel off site and did the miters and glue up on site. We cut the miters in this 8-1/2" wide board with our @dewalttough FLEXVolt track saw, and glued it up with @titebond Quick & Thick. All the joints were kept in line with a combination of Clam Clamp...s, pinch dogs, and @collinstoolco miter clamps. And since I'm going for making this look like one seamless piece, I used white @bondo on all of the joints. This will be sprayed after final sand with @farrowandball Modern Emulsion, Color: Cornforth White. Sometimes you'll just get to a point where people have faith in you and what you have in the works. Meet Josh @joshedney & Jessica @leilani8, more of our family! They were very impactful in our start as they helped us obtain our LLC when we were unsure if we would be able to get it or not. Our early stages were rough because we were going to stick to the mindset of "if we're going to start this business, we're doing it with no loans, no debt". So what that meant was a lot of ...the funds we made in the beginning recirculated right back into paying for something needed to get us up and running.
