The annual NYS burn ban runs March 16th through May 14th. DEC is reminding the public that conditions for wildfires are heightened in springtime when most #wild...fires occur. The annual ban has decreased spring wildfires by nearly 43 % since 2009. More info: https://www.dec.ny.gov/press/122502.html
Over the weekend one of our firefighters cleaned a family members dryer. They noticed an excessive amount of lint when cleaning the exhaust hose and decided to dig deeper into the dryer. The pictures illustrate the amount of lint that covered the inside of the dryer. The exhaust duct build into the dryer between the lint filter and exhaust fan was 75% blocked and the motor was completely encased in lint. This wouldn't of been found during regular cleaning of the exhaust hose.... Taking apart the dryer and utilizing a dryer lint cleaning kit with brushes and a shop vac, they cleaned all the lint from the dryer possibly preventing an unnecessary dryer fire. This is on a dryer that had the lint filter cleaned after each load. It is recommended a professional be hired to do any work on your dryer. Below is copied from the following link: https://www.usfa.fema.gov/pre/outreach/clothes_dryers.html. Cleaning. Clean the lint filter before and after each load of laundry. Don’t forget to clean the back of the dryer where lint can build up. In addition, clean the lint filter with a nylon brush at least every six months or more often if it becomes clogged. Clean lint out of the vent pipe every three months. Have your dryer cleaned regularly by a professional, especially if it is taking longer than normal for clothes to dry. Maintenance Inspect the venting system behind the dryer to ensure it is not damaged or restricted. Put a covering on outside wall dampers to keep out rain, snow and dirt. Make sure the outdoor vent covering opens when the dryer is on. Replace coiled-wire foil or plastic venting with rigid, non-ribbed metal duct. Have gas-powered dryers inspected every year by a professional to ensure that the gas line and connection are together and free of leaks. Check regularly to make sure nests of small animals and insects are not blocking the outside vent. Keep the area around the clothes dryer free of items that can burn. If you will be away from home for an extended time, unplug or disconnect the dryer. Clothes dryer don’t's Don’t use a clothes dryer without a lint filter or with a lint filter that is loose, damaged or clogged. Don’t overload the dryer. Don’t use a wire screen or cloth to cover the wall damper. They can collect lint and clog the dryer vent. Don’t dry anything containing foam, rubber or plastic. An example of an item not to place in a dryer is a bathroom rug with a rubber backing. Don’t dry any item for which manufacturers' instructions state dry away from heat. Don’t dry glass fiber materials (unless manufacturers' instructions allow). Don’t dry items that have come into contact with anything flammable like alcohol, cooking oils or gasoline. Dry them outdoors or in a well-ventilated room, away from heat. Don’t leave a clothes dryer running if you leave home or when you go to bed.
With snow in the forecast please remember to help keep fire hydrants clear of snow.

YELLOW DOT is a free program designed to help first responders provide life-saving medical attention during the first "golden hour" after a crash or emergency. ...A Yellow Dot on the driver's-side rear window of your vehicle will alert first responders that vital medical information is stored in the glove compartment. HOW YELLOW DOT WORKS Each Yellow Dot Kit contains a personal information card and a Yellow Dot decal. Complete both sides of the personal information card as much as possible in pencil. Attach a recent photo of yourself and place it within your car’s glove compartment. Complete one card for each person who regularly occupies the vehicle. Place the Yellow Dot decal on the rear driver’s side window to alert first responders to look in the glove compartment for your medical information. Update the card annually. If you sell your car, remove the Yellow Dot sticker. USE YELLOW DOT AT HOME A Yellow Dot kit can be used to alert those who respond to an emergency in your home. Simply place a Yellow Dot decal on or beside your front door and place a completed card for each occupant in a clear plastic freezer bag. Place it in a visible location on the freezer compartment of your refrigerator. For a Yellow Dot Kit, please contact the Community Services Division at (716) 438-3310, [email protected], or check with your local Town Hall for availability.
